Cougars Stun Irvine Valley In Five Games, Head To State Championships
[view:node_ad=5]The No. 8 College of the Canyons volleyball team defeated No. 1 Irvine Valley College, 3-2 (30-26, 30-20, 15-30, 17-30, 15-13), in the second round of regional play, marking the Cougars second upset of the tournament in as many matches.The Cougars will head to the State Championships, which begins on Nov. 30 at Fresno Pacific University, for the first time under head coach Lisa Hooper. COC will retain Irvine Valley’s No. 1 seed in the south, headed into this weekend’s match as they take on San Joaquin Delta at 5:30 p.m.
COC, who fell to IVC in three during the first match of the season, walked off with the first two games 30-26 and 30-20, before the Lasers came back with two easy wins of their own, 15-30 and 17-30. In the fifth and final game, Irvine Valley took the quick lead, but, a 7-1 run by COC closed out any chance of a Laser comeback, 15-13.
The loss is the only blemish on Irvine Valley’s record, which now drops to 22-1, while the Cougars improve to 16-6.
Tickets for the three-day, double elimination tournament can be bought at the door and are $10 for an adult day pass, $6 for a child day pass and $24 for a three-day tournament pass.
