COC Softball Team Advances To Southern California Super Regional Playoff Round

The College of the Canyons softball team won two games on Sunday to advance to the Southern California Super Regionals.

COC shut out Saddleback College twice to win the best-of-three series. The Lady Cougars won the first game, 12-0, and the second game, 13-0.

COC plays Santiago Canyon at Riverside College in the Super Regionals on Friday.

In college golf, the College of the Canyons men finished in second place in the Southern California Championship at Costa Mesa Country Club. They will play in the state championship at Rancho Canada Golf Course on Monday.

In college track and field, four members of the College of the Canyons team qualified for the Southern California Finals.

Hart High grad Tim White won the triple jump in the Southern California preliminary meet at Antelope Valley College. Freshman Cody Moore finished 10th in the javelin with a personal best throw of 162 feet, 3 inches. Freshman Anthony Fowler qualified in the 400.

Jillian Hurley was the only woman from COC to qualify for the Southern California Finals. She will compete in the pole vault after setting a school record in 10 feet, 4 ¾ inches.

In high school golf, none of the three teams from the Foothill League advanced out of the CIF Northern Team Divisional round of the playoffs.

West Ranch shot 390 as a team and came in sixth place in the divisional tournament at Soule Park Golf Course in Ojai. Hart was eighth and Valencia was 13th. The top three teams advanced to the next round of the CIF golf playoffs.

In high school tennis, the West Ranch and Golden Valley boys begin the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs in the wild-card round today.

West Ranch plays Oxnard and Golden Valley takes on South Hills.

In auto racing, Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley was 10th in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Stockton 99 Speedway.

Derek Thorn won the race. Pursley dropped to third in the West Series standings after two races. He is six points behind Thorn.

In hockey, the Kings beat the St. Louis Blues, 4-3, in Game 4 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. The series is tied 2-2.

Anze Kopitar scored his first goal of the playoffs in the third period to tie the score. Justin Williams scored the game winner less than a minute later.

Game 5 is in St. Louis on Wednesday.

In baseball, the Dodgers lost to the Diamondbacks, 9-2. The Dodgers have lost five games in a row.

The two teams continue their series tonight at Dodger Stadium. Josh Beckett, winless at 0-4, starts for the Dodgers against Brandon McCarthy for the Diamondbacks.
