COC Softball Team Finishes With State-Leading 37 Wins

khts_sportsThe College of the Canyons softball team ended the regular season with a record-breaking performance by one of its players and the most wins in the state.

The Cougars beat El Camino College, 9-6. Adrianna Correra hit her 17th home run of the season and broke the school record. The COC softball team won its 37th game of the season, the most in the state.

The California Community College playoff pairings in softball will be announced this weekend.

In high school swimming, the West Ranch and Saugus teams split a dual meet at the Santa Clarita Aquatics Center.

The West Ranch boys beat Saugus, 92-78, winning seven of the 11 events at the meet. Philip Wong won two races, the 200 individual medley and the 50 freestyle.

The Saugus girls won their meet, 109-61, over West Ranch. Saugus freshman Abby Weitzel won two events, the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. She was also on the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams.

The Canyon swim teams swept Golden Valley in a Foothill League dual meet. The Canyon boys won, 99-71, and the Canyon girls won, 131-39.

Matt Howard won the 100 butterfly and the 500 freestyle in Canyon’s first league win of the season.

Timothy Lee won the 50 freestyle and Gerardo San Jose won the 100 backstroke for Golden Valley.

The Canyon girls won all 11 events at the meet. Shayla Austin won the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.

In auto racing, Bryan Herta Autosport has decided to skip the Izod IndyCar Series race in Brazil this weekend and focus on preparing for the Indianapolis 500 in May.

The team has also decided to switch engine manufacturers, from Lotus to Honda, after driver Alex Tagliani did not finish the past two races. He was 21st in the Grand Prix of Long Beach and his best finish was a 14th-place in the season opener in the Streets of St. Petersburg in Florida.

The team owned by Valencia’s Bryan Herta was the Indy 500 winner last year with Dan Wheldon as its driver.

In hockey, the Kings open the second round of the NHL Western Conference playoffs in St. Louis on Saturday. Both teams won their opening round series, 4-1. The Kings eliminated the top-seeded Vancouver Canucks in five games.

The second-seeded Blues ousted the San Jose Sharks to win their first playoff series since 2002. Game 3 of the series with the Blues will be at Staples Center on May 3.

Kings goalie Jonathan Quick, who led the NHL and set the franchise record with 10 shutouts, is a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, the award given to the best goalie in the league.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
