COC Women’s Basketball Team Moves On In Southern California Regionals

khts_sportsThe College of the Canyons women’s basketball team took the first step toward a state championship. COC beat Mt. San Jacinto College, 88-73, in the second round of the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regional playoffs. COC had a bye in the first round.

Dominique Turner led the seventh-seeded Cougars with 21 points and seven assists. Beverly Weaver dropped in 19 points off the bench for COC.

COC plays San Bernardino Valley College, the second-seeded team in the Southern California Regionals, on Wednesday night.

The Canyon girls basketball team lost to Buena, 60-53, in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs.

Alia McCoy led Canyon with 20 points. Three Canyon starters, Adriana Dent, Amber Evans and Tiffini Stone, all fouled out of the game. Before Dent fouled out, she scored 15 points. Evans scored seven points.

The Canyon girls reached the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section playoffs for the second time in school history. Canyon played Hart, and lost, in the 2006 Division 1A semifinals.

The Master’s College men’s basketball team beat Vanguard, 78-77 in overtime, in the Golden State Athletic Conference regular season finale.

Anthony Cammon made four 3-pointers and scored 25 points for The Master’s College. The Mustangs move on to the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament and will play Concordia, the third-ranked team in the NAIA, in the first round.

The Master’s College women’s basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 71-70 win over Vanguard. Erica Inge scored 23 points and had five assists for The Master’s College.

The Master’s College women begin play in the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament against California Baptist.

The Hart boys soccer team lost to Fontana, 3-2, in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs, ending its deepest playoff run since 1983.

Hart was down 3-0 before scoring two second-half goals and clawing its way back in the game.

Gabe Robinson scored Hart’s first goal late in the second half. Niko Ferrero cut the Fontana lead to one goal during stoppage time in the second half.

The Lakers beat the Oklahoma City Thunder, 90-87, and won their fourth game in a row. Andrew Bynum had a nice game with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Kobe Bryant struggled to find his shooting stroke and scored only 17 points. He was 8-of-22 from the field.

The Lakers head to Minnesota for a game against the Timberwolves on Tuesday night.

Dodgers Hall of Fame outfielder Duke Snider died Sunday. He was 84.

Snider was on the only Brooklyn Dodgers team to win a World Series in 1955, the first in franchise history. He won two World Series titles with the Dodgers and still holds the franchise record for home runs and RBIs. He hit 389 home runs and drove in 1,271 runs as a Dodger.

Snider was a career .295 hitter with 407 career home runs. He was an eight-time All Star and played in six World Series.

The Kings lost winger Marco Sturm over the weekend when they tried to pass him through waivers before the trade deadline. The Washington Capitals made a claim on Sturm, leaving the Kings looking for a forward before today’s trade deadline.

Without Sturm, the Kings kept their little four-game winning streak alive, 4-3, over the Colorado Avalance on Saturday.

The Kings are home against the Detroit Red Wings tonight. The Kings have won the first two games of their current six-game homestand.

The Red Wings are coming off a 3-2 shootout win over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.
