The College of the Canyons women’s soccer team was shut out by Ventura College, 1-0, and eliminated from the Southern Regional playoffs.

COC, seeded No. 2 in the playoffs, lost for the first time this season. The Lady Cougars were ranked No. 3 in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Lupita Magana scored the lone goal of the game off a free kick in the 31st minute. Ventura entered the second-round playoff match as the No. 7 seed.

COC finishes with a 18-1-4 record.

In college football, Cal fired coach Jeff Tedford, who recruited heavily from the Santa Clarita Valley.

Among the players who went to Cal under Tedford are Hart High’s Kyle Boller, Valencia High’s Shane Vereen and J.J. Arrington, who played at College of the Canyons. All three played in the NFL as well.

Canyon High’s Nate Longshore played quarterback at Cal under Tedford and West Ranch running back Jeff Coprich is currently at Cal.

Tedford coached at Cal for 11 years and won a school record 82 games.

In college basketball, No. 11 UCLA beat Georgia, 60-56, in the consolation game of the Legends Classic tournament in New York.

Shabazz Muhammad made his first start for the Bruins and scored 21 points

In the NBA, the Lakers beat the visiting Brooklyn Nets, 95-90, in coach Mike D’Antoni’s debut on the sidelines.

Dwight Howard scored 23 points and had 15 rebounds as the Lakers won their third game in a row. They have won five of the past six games and are over the .500 mark for the first time this season.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
