COC’s David Haerle Picked By Houston Astros On Day 3 Of MLB Draft

khts_sportsCollege of the Canyons pitcher David Haerle was one of three players from the Santa Clarita Valley picked on the third and final day of the Major League Baseball draft.

He was taken by the Houston Astros in the 39th round. The Quartz Hill High graduate was the second player from College of the Canyons picked in the draft. Second baseman Juan Perez went to the Cininnati Reds on the second day of the draft.

Valencia High graduate Josh Corrales, a pitcher with Cal State Dominguez Hills, was picked in the 44th round by the Seattle Mariners.

The Astros took fellow Valencia High graduate Justin Shults, a first baseman at UC Riverside, in the 46th round.

The Valley Invitational Baseball League began play this week with West Ranch winning its opener on Monday.

Josh Heinz drove in two runs with a double for West Ranch in a 4-2 win over Saugus. Cody Bennet earned the win in the first game of the summer league.

Hart lost to Crespi, 6-5.

In the NHL playoffs, the Boston Bruins shut out the Vancouver Canucks, 4-0, in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final. Tim Thomas made 38 saves to record his third shutout of the playoffs.

The series is tied at two games apiece. Game 5 is in Vancouver on Friday.

The Dodgers were held in check by Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies. He tossed eight shut-out innings and beat the Dodgers 2-0. Ryan Howard hit his 13th home run of the season and the Dodgers were held to seven hits, six of them singles, in the game.

In other games, the Rockies beat the Padres, 5-3, the Giants beat the Nationals, 3-1, and the Diamondbacks lost to the Pirates, 3-2 in 12 innings.

The Cubs snapped an eight-game losing streak and knocked off the Reds, 4-1, the Braves beat the Marlins, 3-2, in 10 innings, the Astros beat the Cardinals, 4-1, and the Brewers beat the Mets, 7-6.

In the American League, the Angels lost to the Rays, 4-3 in 10 innings, after scoring three runs in the eighth inning to tie the game. The Rays wasted an outstanding start by Hart High grad James Shields, who took a shutout into the eighth inning. The Orioles beat the A’s, 3-2, the Rangers beat the Tigers, 7-3 and the Mariners beat the White Sox, 7-4 in 10 innings.

The Twins beat the Indians, 3-2 in 10 innings, the Red Sox nearly doubled up on the Yankees, 11-6, and the Blue Jays beat the Royals, 9-8.
