COC’s Vogelsang Earns Spot On All America Baseball Team

khts_sportsCollege of the Canyons left fielder Cal Vogelsang earned a spot on the Southern California All-America team. He is the only COC baseball player to make the squad honoring the top players in Southern California.

The West Ranch High graduate was fourth among community college players in the state with 11 home runs. He also hit .380, second best on the COC team, and had 102 total bases, good for ninth in the state.

In auto racing, Newhall’s Travis Thirkettle posted a pair of top-five finishes in the NASCAR Super Late Models at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale. He was the runner-up in one of the races and fifth in the other.

Justin Johnson of Las Vegas won both Super Late Model races at Irwindale.

In the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley finished sixth in the race at Douglas County Speedway in Oregon.

It was his third top 10 in four West Series races this year.

Eric Holmes won the West Series race, his third in a row at Douglas County Speedway.

In the NBA Finals, the Lakers couldn’t cool down the hot Celtic hands of Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo.

Allen his a NBA Finals record eight 3-pointers and Rondo recorded a triple-double in a 103-94 win over the Lakers.

Allen led all scorers with 32 points and hit seven of his eight 3-pointers in the first half. Rondo scored 19 points, had 12 rebounds and 10 assists.

Pau Gasol led the Lakers with 25 points and eight rebounds.

The NBA Finals are tied at one game apiece. Game 3 is Tuesday in Boston.

The Dodgers got a clutch hit from an unlikely source in an extra-inning win over the visiting Atlanta Braves. Rookie catcher AJ Ellis knocked in the game-winning run in the 11th inning to give the Dodgers a 5-4 win over the Braves.

The Dodgers scored three runs in the fifth inning to tie the game. Rafael Furcal hit his first home run of the season and James Loney added a two-run, two-out single in the fifth.

Next up for the Dodgers is the St. Louis Cardinals tonight at Dodger Stadium. It will be Carlos Monasterios for the Dodgers against P.J. Walters for the Cardinals. Pregame starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
