COC Football Preview: Cougars Host Pasadena City College

The College of the Canyons football team will face the visiting Pasadena City College Lancers, as COC hosts the second of five home games Saturday, Sept. 27 at Cougar Stadium. Saturday will be the first conference game for these two members of the Southern California Football Association’s National Division, Northern Conference.

Both teams enter the match up having won their first game of the season in week three.

The Cougars found the winning way last weekend, defeating Santa Ana College 31-10 for its first victory of the young season. COC enters tonight’s game as the No. 15 ranked team in Southern California, according to the California Community Colleges Football Coaches Association’s most recent poll.COC Football Preview: Cougars Host Pasadena City College

For the season, the Cougars are averaging 24.7 points and 326 yards of total offense per game. COC has found success on offense by using a two quarterback system, with sophomore Tony Dawson and freshman Devon Dunn each getting reps under center. Dawson has completed 27-of-48 attempts (56.2 percent completion percentage) for 327 yards and two touchdowns. He also leads the team in rushing with 145 yards and two touchdowns on 35 attempts.

Dunn is 20-of-46 thus far on the season, to go along with 229 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns. COC has also received points through the kicking game, with sophomore kicker Eric Kreitz executing on right PATs and four field goals through the first three games.

Defensively the Cougars have received strong play from middle linebacker Kenneth Jacobs who leads the teams with 25 total tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss. The COC secondary has also been a point of pride for the Cougars, with safeties Austin Murillo (21 tackles) and Triston Brown (14 tackles) each registering an interception through the first three games.

PCC opened the season with a 37-20 home loss to El Camino College, before dropping a 17-14 heartbreaker to Grossmont College in week two. Last week, the Lancers were able to hold off L.A. Harbor College 19-7 at PCC’s Robinson Stadium to improve its record to 1-2. In that game Pasadena racked up an impressive 448 yards of total offense, with 271 yards coming via the arm of quarterback Dejon Williams. On the ground, the Lancers rushed for 176 yards and were led by freshman running back Justin Carrol who racked up 109 yards on 12 carries.

The Cougars will next travel to Bakersfield College for a 6 p.m. kickoff Saturday, Oct. 4, before returning home to host Saddleback College on Oct. 11.
