College Of The Canyons Baseball And Softball Gaining Ground

The College of the Canyons baseball team beat Glendale College, 5-2, in a Western State Conference game.

David Oppenheim was 3-for-4 with a double and a triple and scored two runs. Chris Devery went 2-for-4 and drove in a run.

JC Cloney pitched a complete game. He gave up one run on nine hits and struck out seven.

The Cougars have won two games in a row and seven of their past eight.

They are 11-9-1 overall and 7-1 in conference.

College of the Canyons Sports

In college softball, the College of the Canyons shut out Santa Monica College, 19-0, and won their third game in a row.

COC improved to 9-8 overall and 6-1 in the Western State Conference.

In high school basketball, the Canyon girls have a new coach. Jessica Haayer was introduced as the new coach taking over the successful program from Chuck Johns.

Johns resigned after coaching the Canyon girls for the past five seasons.

Haayer was the Canyon girls junior varsity coach last season. Before that, she was the head coach at Seaside High in Monterey.

In soccer, the Santa Clarita Storm added two players from the Santa Clarita Valley to its roster for the 2014 season.

Brandon Davey and Ashton Kolander will play for the Storm, pending National Premier Soccer League approval. Both players were on the College of the Canyons soccer team. Davey played at Canyon High School. Kolander was on the West Ranch soccer team.

The Santa Clarita Storm begins its season against the San Diego Flash on Saturday.

Los Angeles Sports Report

In the NHL, the Kings beat the Washington Capitals, 2-1, in a shootout and snapped their three-game losing streak.

Kings coach Darryl Sutter won his 500th game.

Next up for the Kings are the Florida Panthers on Saturday.
