College Of The Canyons Baseball Team Opens Playoffs Against Southwestern

khts_sportsThe College of the Canyons baseball team begins play in the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regional playoffs today against Southwestern College in Chula Vista.

COC finished in a three-way tie for second place in the Western State Conference South Division standings. The Cougars will face top-seeded Rio Hondo College if they beat Southwestern.

Southwestern went 20-15 and finished in third place in the Pacific Coast Conference.

The Master’s College baseball team finished the season on a winning note, beating Biola 3-2 in the season finale.

But The Master’s College split its season-ending doubleheader with Biola, losing the first game, 7-3.

Ryan Shackelford drove in the game-winning run for The Master’s College with an RBI single in the eighth inning against Biola, the 12th ranked team in the NAIA.

Parker Price was 3-for-4 with a double and drove in a run for The Master’s College in the first game.

The Master’s College finished the season with a 25-25 overall record and in seventh place in the Golden State Athletic Conference standings with a 16-20 record. The top-six teams in conference advanced to playoffs.

The Saugus and Hart softball teams meet at the Hart PONY Complex tonight for a crucial game that could decide the Foothill League championship.

Both teams are part of a three-way tie for first place in the league standings. Hart and Saugus each have 4-2 records. Hart is coming off a 3-2 win over Canyon. Saugus lost to West Ranch, 2-0, on Thursday.

The game starts at 7.

West Ranch, also tied for first place in the league standings, is home against suddenly struggling Valencia. The Vikings are in jeopardy of losing the Foothill Leage championship for the first time in 10 years. Valencia is 3-3 in league and all alone in fourth place.

West Ranch needs another win to keep pace with Hart and Saugus.

The Canyon softball team travels for a Foothill League game against Golden Valley.

The Santa Clarita Christian softball team is also in action today for a game against Hillcrest Christian. The Trinity Classicial Academy softball team travels to First Lutheran.

In track and field, the Foothill League preliminary meet begins today at College of the Canyons.

The Foothill League prelims in high school swimming are also set to start today at the Santa Clarita Aquatics Center.

In high school volleyball, the Valencia boys will look to extend their state record winning streak in Foothill League matches to 101 against Hart.

The Golden Valley boys volleyball team is on the road against West Ranch. The Saugus boys  travel to Canyon.

There are a pair of high school baseball games on tap. Santa Clarita Christian is on the road against Hillcrest Christian and Trinity is at Los Angeles Lutheran.

In the NHL playoffs, the Boston Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers, 3-2 in overtime, to take a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

In the NBA playoffs, the Lakers lost to the Dallas Mavericks, 96-94, in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals.

The Lakers had a nine-point lead at halftime and was up 16 points in the third quarter. But the Mavericks outscored the Lakers, 25-16, in the fourth quarter and went on a 9-2 run to end the game.

Kobe Bryant scored a game-high 36 points. Dirk Nowitzki had 28 points and 14 rebounds for the Mavericks.

Game 2 of the series is Wednesday night at Staples Center.

The Atlanta Hawks stunned the top-seeded Chicago Bulls in the Eastern Conference playoffs, winning Game 1 of their series, 103-95.
