College of the Canyons

Softball: No. 8 College of the Canyons outscored No. 9 Cerritos 22-9 in a two game series sweep in the CCCAA Southern California Regionals this past Friday and Saturday. The Cougars knocked Cerritos around for 16 hits in Game 1 on Friday, a 12-4 victory, and had another 13 hits in Saturday’s 10-5 win.

COC lost to Cerritos, 16-7, less than a month ago (April 14th). They battered the Falcons last weekend.

It is the third consecutive year that Canyons (28-14) advances to the second round of the postseason. They are riding a four-game winning streak into the Southern California Super Regionals against No. 2 Mt. San Antonio. The two teams split the season series, each team winning one run games on the road.

Game 1 at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut is Friday night at 7:00.

Baseball: The Cougars got off to a great start down at Palomar with a 5-2 victory in Game 1 on Friday with Jacob Lopez pitching a gem (nine strikeouts, two earned runs).

However, things fell apart on Saturday and COC couldn’t make all the way up for slow starts in Games 2 and 3. Canyons rallied from down 4-0 in Game 2 to lead 8-5, but lost in the top of the ninth inning.

Then, they fell in a 7-0 hole in the deciding Game 3, only to rally again and tie the game 7-7 in the top of the eighth inning. Palomar would proceed to get a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the series 2-1.

COC’s season ends with a 28-14 record.

Los Angeles Dodgers

When it rains, it pours.

And it’s a torrential downpour on the Dodgers at the present. An MRI confirmed that Clayton Kershaw has biceps tendinitis and will be placed on the 10-day disabled list.

Kershaw joins Justin Turner, Corey Seager (out for season), Yasiel Puig, Logan Forsythe, Hyun-Jin Ryu and Julio Urias.

Brock Stewart will take Kershaw’s place on the roster, recalled from Triple A.

How fleeting excitement can be during the Major League Baseball season. Friday, the Dodgers earned their 23rd no-hitter, most in league history.

Back-to-back losses at the weekend to the Padres and the top three players on the club injured, reality can hit like a ton of bricks on Monday.

It won’t get any easier with the Arizona Diamondbacks in town on Tuesday. The D-Backs own the National League’s best record (23-11).
