COC English Department Calling For Poets And Writers

College of the Canyons faculty members are looking for talented poets and writers who would like to share their work with others.

In celebration of fine writing, officials from the COC English Department are planning a curated reading in May and are calling for writers interested in participating to submit their work by April 24, school officials announced Monday.

“Reading one’s work publicly is a challenge, but it is a rewarding and unforgettable experience,” said Svetlana Lynch, an English professor at COC. “This is a fantastic opportunity for writers to experience the thrill of sharing their work with a group of people who share their passion for prose and poetry.” COC English Department

The reading, “Poets & Writers,” is scheduled to take place on May 22 at 5 p.m. in Room 343 of Mentry Hall at the college’s Valencia campus. The reading will consist of works selected by a committee prior to the event, according to a COC news release.

In order to participate, writers must submit original work by 12 p.m. on April 24 at the English desk inside the college’s learning center at the Valencia campus. There is no entry fee to participate, and submitted work will be reviewed and selected by a committee of three COC faculty members and one student, event officials said.

Poets may submit a maximum of four poems, and short stories or essays are limited to seven double-spaced pages. All work must be typed, names on submitted pages must be omitted and four copies of each entry are required.

Submissions will not be returned, and selected works must be read by the author at the event. Decisions will be emailed to participants by May 13, according to the news release.

    Submit prose, poetry, or fiction to the English desk in the Learning Center. The deadline for submissions is Monday, April 18, 2016, at noon. For more information, call 661-362-3349
