“It felt great,” said first place winner Rodrigo Ornelas. “The main goal was to get the time I wanted (15:45 minutes) I wasn’t trying to get first as much as just running my own race, but I was happy when I won.”

There will be a total of six summer series events. They began Thursday, July 10 and will continue every week on Thursday nights until the final event on August 21. All races have a start time of 7:00 p.m. for the three mile.  The kid’s race begins at 6:45 p.m.

A $50 dollar “series card” can be purchased to participate in all of the events including the final and the dinner. For the kids to participate, registration is $2 per race.

The summer series takes place at the Valencia Campus of COC on the intersection of Valencia Blvd. and Rockwell Canyon Road, and consists of two races.

The first is a one-lap race for young children around the track at Cougar Stadium.

Following that is the main event; a three-mile race starting at the baseball field, winding through the hillside overlooking the Santa Clarita Valley, then finally ending back at the track on Cougar Stadium.

The primary goal of the race is to serve as training practice for track & field and cross-country athletes from the surrounding high schools and colleges, while raising money for the COC team so they can afford better equipment, jersey’s, and training camps, Ornelas said.

The six year veteran of the race encourages people to come out and participate.

“It’s a lot of fun, there’s a lot of cool people, and it’s good exercise,” Ornelas said.
