Amber Halaby, treasurer for the Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society, said the food and clothing drive at COC’s Valencia campus was part of the club’s ongoing effort to benefit families in Santa Clarita and beyond.

“The drive was our activity based meeting,” Halaby said. “Every semester we have something to benefit others in place of our regular meeting. Last semester, we made sandwiches for the homeless shelter here in Santa Clarita.”

Halaby said donations from KHTS radio were used to help facilitate donations for the most recent food and clothing drive in April.

“The KHTS radio station donated Restaurant Row certificates to Gamma Beta Phi and I set up an incentive program,” Halaby said in an email. “Whoever brought in the most donations for Help the Children would win certificates for some of the best restaurants in town.”

In addition to her work with Gamma Beta Phi, Halaby said she also volunteers at her church’s kitchen to help provide food for those in need.

Halaby said the community service club’s next event will be in Newhall for the Cinco de Mayo festival.

“We will be helping out at the information booth during the Cinco de Mayo Festival on Main Street in Newhall,” Halaby said. “We will let people know about the Single Mothers Outreach Organization.”
