Daniel De La Torre Wins Final Race Of COC Cross Country Series

khts_sportsDaniel De La Torre won the final race of the College of the Canyons cross country series. The 16-year-old finished ahead of Ryan Vargas in the men’s race.

Nancy James-Klinger won the women’s race. She was followed by Elaine Woodward in second.

The College of the Canyons cross country series attracted record number of runners to each race. More than 500 runners entered each event.

In golf, Sahith Theegala of Chino Hills won the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series tournament at Robinson Ranch with an even-par over the three rounds.

Valencia’s Glen Lee shot a 9-over par 81 in the final round of the tournament and finished in 32nd place. West Ranch freshman Steven Moentmann was 4-over par in the final round, but finished a distant 36 shots off the lead in the tournament in 61st place.

West Ranch sophomore John McClafferty was 68th.

In baseball, rookie Mark Trumbo hit a two-run, walk-off home run and the Angels avoided the sweep with a 2-1 win over the Rangers. Down 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Trumbo hit his 23rd home run of the season and the Angels were able to salvage the final game of a four-game series against the first-place Rangers.

The Rangers won the first three games of the series and leave Anaheim with a six-game lead in the American League West standings.

In other games, the Blue Jays shut out the A’s, 7-0, the Yankees doubled up on the Twins, 8-4, the Indians beat the White Sox, 4-2, and the Red Sox slipped past the Royals, 4-3.

In the National League, the Braves shut out the Giants, 1-0, the Phillies knocked off the Diamondbacks, 4-1, the Padres beat the Marlins, 3-1, and the Nationals beat the Reds, 3-1.
