Dodgers Split Season Opening Series With Giants 2-2

It was a somewhat bizarre start to the season, Los Angeles salvaged a series split with San Francisco, despite allowing just two runs in four games.

With the first series of the National League West rivalry in the books, the scoreline through the first four games ended up being Dodgers 14, Joe Panik 2. Panik’s solo home runs on the first and second day of the season secured two wins for the Giants, which on the surface appears like a nice start to the season.

In reality, once the Dodger bats woke up over the weekend to outscore their Bay Area rivals 14-0, the series was much more lopsided.

L.A. starting pitching was masterful to start the year; only Clayton Kershaw allowed a run. Alex Wood pitched eight scoreless innings, Kenta Maeda struck out ten in five, and 38-year-old Rich Hill picked up where he left off last season with six scoreless innings on Sunday.

Cody Bellinger hit the Dodgers first homer of the season (no surprise), Yasmani Grandal went 4-for-10 in the series (big surprise), and Kike Hernandez played three different positions without the club missing a beat (pleasant surprise).

Now that baseball moves to it’s second week of the season and teams start to get in routine, we’ll be able to get a read on what the 2018 Los Angeles Dodgers intend to be.

Are they the team who was shutout in a pair of 1-0 games at home to start the season? Or the team that outscored the Giants 14-0 in the next two games and looked dominant?

More NL West work ahead, starting with a three-game series in Arizona.

Hyun-Jin Ryu will take the mound against the Diamondbacks’ Taijuan Walker tonight. First pitch is at 6:40, and you hear every inning of Dodgers baseball live on your hometownstation KHTS FM 98.1.
