Dodgers Use Outfielder To Pitch With Poor Results, Lose Series To Phillies

A day after Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts opted to go with Kike Hernandez in the 16th inning of Tuesday’s marathon in Philadelphia, the Phillies finished off the series several hours later in today’s matinee with a 7-3 win.

So, last night was weird.

The Dodgers and Phillies were in the midst of a game that wouldn’t end, with no runs being scored from the top of the eighth inning to the 16th.

Roberts decided to take Kenley Jansen out (one and two-thirds innings pitched) and give Enrique Hernandez his first Major League appearance on the mound. Hernandez has made 51 starts in the outfield and 50 in the infield this season.

He proceeded to walk two batters and surrender a walk-off home run to Crespi High School graduate Trevor Plouffe.

It was an interesting decision to effectively give up on the game by the Dodgers. With today’s loss, Los Angeles is 56-46, tied atop the National League West with the Diamondbacks. Bookmark this post if the Dodgers lose the division by one game.

The recently recalled Walker Buehler got into trouble in the fifth inning of today’s series finale against Philadelphia, and Scott Alexander was unable to bail him out. Former Dodgers’ farm system player Carlos Santana hit the 3-RBI triple that turned out to be the winner.

They’ve made it to the final leg of this 10-game road trip out of the All-Star Break, a tough four game set in Atlanta against a good Braves club.

Series begins at Turner Field, Thursday, with Rich Hill on the Hill. First pitch is at 4:35, and you can listen live on your Dodgers station in the Santa Clarita Valley, KHTS 98.1 FM.

INJURIES: Justin Turner is back on the disabled list (right groin). Alex Verdugo was recalled from Triple A to take his spot on the roster, while Manny Machado will move to third base to shore up the position for the time being.
