khts_sportsTwo players from Valencia High School made the All-CIF Division II boys volleyball team.

Nick Ferry made the first team as an outside hitter. He recorded 98 kills in his senior season playing outside hitter on a part-time basis. He normally plays libero, where he recorded 279 digs.

Valencia setter Steven Crane made the All-CIF second team. He had 741 assists in his senior season.

Both players will continue their volleyball careers in college. Ferry is going to Springfield College in Massachusetts. Crane will play at UC Santa Cruz.

The Santa Clarita Blue Heat, fresh off its first draw in franchise history, is in Colorado for a United Soccer League W-League game against the Rush.

The Blue Heat has a 0-2-1 record. The women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against the Seattle Sounders on Saturday at College of the Canyons.

The Colorado Rush has an 0-0-3 record and tied the Pali Blues 2-2 in its last game.

It was a crazy day of sports around the globe.

First, the U.S. soccer team pulled off a stunner in the World Cup in South Africa. Landon Donovan scored a goal in the 91st minute that beat Algeria, 1-0. The United States went from being eliminated from the World Cup to winning its group and advancing to the round of 16.

The United States will face Ghana in the knockout round on Saturday.

At Wimbledon in England, American John Isner and Frenchman Nicholas Mahut are in the midst of the longest match in tennis history. The match is tied at 59 games apiece in the fifth set. It has lasted 10 hours. The fifth set was going on for 7 hours and 6 minutes before being suspended. To put it in perspective, the longest match before this one was 6 hours and 33 minutes in the 2004 French Open.

The match will continue into its third day today. It was suspended because of darkness in the fourth set on Tuesday.

The Dodgers showed some signs of life in the ninth inning, but lost again to the Angels, 2-1.

The Dodgers had runners on first and second with one out. But Angels closer Brian Fuentes picked off Matt Kemp at second base.

Then with two outs, pinch-hitter Jamey Carroll hit a bloop single that would have tied the game. But Russell Martin was thrown out at second before Reed Johnson could score, ending the game.

The Dodgers have lost six games in a row. The Angels won their fifth straight against the Dodgers.

The series ends tonight. Charlie Haeger gets the start for the Dodgers. Scott Kazmir goes for the Angels. Pregame starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
