First Round Of CIF Baseball, Softball Playoffs Begin Today

khts_sportsThe first round of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs begin today with four teams from the Foothill League in action.

Top-seeded Valencia opens at home against Pacifica and Hart hosts Agoura.

Valencia won the Foothill League championship. Hart finished second in league play.

West Ranch opens on the road against Esperanza. Saugus had to play in the wild-card round of playoffs and advanced into the first round. They face fourth-seeded Simi Valley on the road.

The Southern Section Division I baseball playoffs start today as well. Valencia is home against El Dorado. Valencia won the Foothill League championship. El Dorado is the third-place team from the Century League and beat Westlake from the Marmonte League, 7-6, in the wild-card round.

The West Ranch baseball team finished second in the Foothill League and is on the road against Esperanza, the second-place team from the Sunset League, in the opening round of playoffs.

All games are scheduled to start at 3:15.

Two of the top swimmers in the Santa Clarita Valley were involved in a car crash and missed the CIF Masters Meet in Long Beach on Tuesday according to a report in The Signal.

Canyon’s Kearsten Livingstone and Hart’s Maggie Hanson were hit by an alleged drunk driver on The Old Road in Newhall on Saturday night. A third passenger, Haley Niner from Hart, was in the car with the girls and also injured in the crash.

Livingstone, a senior at Canyon, is headed to UC Berkeley in the fall. Hanson, also a senior, will swim for Oregon State.

The Lakers took a 2-0 lead in the NBA Western Conference finals against the Phoenix Suns, winning Game 2, 124-112, at Staples Center.

Pau Gasol scored 14 of his team-high 29 points in the fourth quarter. Kobe Bryant had 21 points and 13 assists and the Lakers outscored the Suns, 34-22, in the fourth quarter.

Game 3 is on Sunday in Phoenix.

The Dodgers lost to the San Diego Padres, 10-5, and saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end.

Adrian Gonzalez drove in a career high six runs, three on a home run in the fourth inning.

Russell Martin doubled and scored in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.

The Dodgers wrap up their little two-game series with the Padres tonight. Clayton Kershaw gets the start for the Dodgers. Kevin Correia is on the mound for the Padres. Pregame starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
