Five Foothill League Athletes Advance To CIF State Track And Field Finals

Five track and field athletes from the Foothill League qualified for the CIF state finals at the Masters Meet at Cerritos College over the weekend.

Saugus sophomore Sabrina Janes won the 800 meters and will move on to the CIF state championship meet in Clovis this weekend.

Two other athletes from Saugus qualified for the state meet. Samantha Ortega will compete in the 3,200 after finishing in fifth place at the Masters Meet in a personal best 10 minutes, 30.68 seconds.

Rodrigo Ornelas qualified in the boys 3,200 with a seventh-place finish in 9 minutes, 8.58 seconds at the Masters Meet.

Valencia’s Olivia Pear will compete in the 800 with Janes. Pear finished in fifth place in 2 minutes, 13.69 seconds at the Masters Meet.

Canyon’s Jeremy Kimmer qualified in the high jump with a fourth-place finish in 6 feet, 7 inches at the Masters Meet.

In college baseball, The Master’s College lost to Lewis & Clark State, 3-2, in the NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho. The Mustangs were eliminated from the World Series tournament.

The Master’s College had a 2-0 lead heading into the ninth inning. Joe Riddle was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two walks for the Mustangs.

But Lewis & Clark scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game.

The Mustangs end their season with a 44-17 record.

In auto racing, Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley was third in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Brainerd International Raceway in Minnesota.

Michael Self won the race. Pursley is in third place in the West Series standings after three races.

In the NHL playoffs, the Kings are in the Western Conference finals for the second year in a row after eliminating the San Jose Sharks.

The Kings beat the Sharks, 2-1, in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals. Justin Williams scored both goals for the Kings.

The reigning Stanley Cup champions await the winner of the series between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings. Their Game 7 is tonight in Chicago.

In baseball, the Dodgers shut out the visiting Angels, 3-0, behind a two-hitter from starter Hyun-Jin Ryu.

Luis Cruz and his .114 battering average hit a two-run home run and the Dodgers have won the first two games of the Freeway Series.

The series moves to Anaheim tonight. Listen to the game between the Dodgers and the Angels on AM 1220, KHTS. First pitch is at 7:05.
