The Valencia boys basketball team beat West Ranch, 67-61, for their second Foothill League win in a row.
Five players were ejected from the game for fighting in the fourth quarter. Among them were Valencia’s Lonnie Jackson, the team’s leading scorer, and West Ranch’s Brian Polynice.
Valencia’s Troy Hammel scored a game-high 15 points, but was one of the players ejected in the fourth quarter. Jackson had 11 points before he was ejected.
Justin Ballenger scored 15 points for West Ranch. The Wildcats hit 12 3-pointers in the game, but it wasn’t enough to win the game.
In other boys basketball games on Friday night, Canyon beat Hart, 68-47. Canyon’s Coley Apsay scored 20 points and Darnel Haggerty scored 19 and had six rebounds in the win.
Hart’s Roman Delgado scored 15 points, had eight rebounds and five assists.
The Saugus boys basketball team beat Golden Valley, 72-53, behind 24 points from Jeremy Gatewood. Teammate Mitch Davis chipped in with 13 points.
Wade Rodriguez scored 22 points to lead Golden Valley. Nick Billy scored 14.

On the girls side, the Canyon girls kept their undefeated Foothill League in tact with a 56-45 win over Hart. Adriana Dent scored 21 points and Amber Evans scored 14 for Canyon, 6-0 in league play.
Melissa Boscarino scored 16 points and Mariah Glasshoff had 14 for Hart.
The Saugus girls beat Golden Valley, 56-24. Megan Dawe scored 16 points to lead Saugus. Kim Smither scored six points and had 11 rebounds.
The Valencia girls beat West Ranch, 58-38. Valencia outscored West Ranch, 23-5, in the fourth quarter to pull away in an otherwise close game.
Faith Anumba led Valencia with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
Alexus Bryant scored a team-high 12 points for West Ranch.
The Golden Valley boys soccer team won its first Foothill League game in school history, 2-1, over Saugus.
Francis Diaz and Guy Meyers each scored a goal for Golden Valley in the first 10 minutes of the game. Golden Valley made their goals stand up for the remainder of the game.
Cameron Sikich scored the lone goal for Saugus just before halftime. Golden Valley goalkeeper Fernando Lauchu held Saugus scoreless in the second half.
The Hart boys soccer team beat Canyon, 2-1, and completed the Foothill League sweep of its crosstown rivals.
Nico Ferrero and Jose Vidrio each scored for Hart, the leaders of the Foothill League with a 5-1-0 record.
The West Ranch boys soccer team beat Valencia, 2-1. Chris Tumasone scored the game-winning goal for West Ranch in the 60th minute.
Lucas Reilly scored the first goal for West Ranch off an assist from Cody Klop.
The Valencia girls soccer team shut out West Ranch, 2-0. Eryn Spencer gave Valencia a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 15th minute.
Valencia’s Brittany Sayre made it 2-0 with a goal in the second half.
The Saugus girls beat Golden Valley, 3-0, behind two goals from Nicole Penick. Stacey Atwater scored the other goal for Saugus.
Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley put his car on the front row to start the NASCAR Toyota All Star Showdown, but faded in the final 10 laps of the race and finished 20th.
Pursley and eventual Showdown winner Jason Bowles were fighting for the lead at the end of the race when Pursley’s car had a flat tire with eight laps to go. Bowles took the lead and went on to win the first Showdown race of his career.
Sean Woodside of Saugus won the NASCAR late model race in the Showdown.
The Lakers have a two-game losing streak after getting beat by the visiting Boston Celtics, 109-96. Kobe Bryant scored 41 points, but didn’t get much help from his teammates. Lamar Odom scored 15 points off the bench.
Six Celtics scored in double figures. Paul Pierce led the way with 32 points and Rajon Rondo had 10 points and 16 assists.
The Kings’ Anze Kopitar scored two goals in the NHL All-Star game for Team Staal and helped his team hold on for an 11-10 win over Team Lidstrom.
Kopitar got his team on the scoreboard with a goal in the first period. It was the first goal of the game for his team after Team Lidstrom jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
Kopitar scored again in the second period to cut Team Lidstrom’s lead to one, 6-5.
