Five SCV Basketball Players Selected To All-CIF Teams

khts_sportsWest Ranch’s Ako Kaluna and Canyon’s Coley Apsay were selected to All-CIF Southern Section basketball teams. All totaled, five basketball players from the Santa Clarita Valley were chosen

Kaluna, a junior forward at West Ranch, was selected to the Division 1A team. He averaged 16.1 points and 10.9 rebounds per game in leading West Ranch to the quarterfinals of the Division 1A playoffs.

Apsay, a senior guard at Canyon, earned a spot on the Division 2AA team. He led the Cowboys to a share of the Foothill League championship with West Ranch and to the second round of the Division 2AA playoffs.

James Brooks, a senior at Trinity Classical Academy, was selected to the Division 6 team. He averaged 14.7 points and 9.7 rebounds per game and guided the Knights into the second round of the Division 6 playoffs.

On the girls side, Canyon’s Tiffini Stone was selected to the All-CIF Southern Section Division 2AA team.

Megan Dawe, who set the school record for scoring at Saugus, is on the All-CIF Division 2A team.

The All-CIF Southern Section soccer teams were also released with a few Santa Clarita Valley players garnering recognition.

Santa Clarita Christian’s Chad Latch, a senior midfielder, was selected to the Division 7 team.

Saugus senior Serena Banas-Smith, a senior defender, made the Division 1 team.

Chloe Crawford, a senior midfielder at Vasquez High, was selected to the Division 5 team.

Megan Gallagher, a junior midfielder at Santa Clarita Christian, earned a spot on the Division 7 team.

In college baseball, The Master’s College lost to Azusa Pacific, 4-3. Tanner Leighton was 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored a run for The Master’s College.

In auto racing, Bryan Herta Autosport added a driver to its Firestone Indy Lights team. Troy Castaneda will drive the team’s No. 28 entry starting with the Streets of St. Petersburg race in Florida on Saturday.

Castaneda will be testing at Barber Motorsports Park with the Bryan Herta Autosport team today.

In baseball, the Dodgers lost to the Cleveland Indians, 4-3, in a Cactus League game in Arizona. Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw struck out five in 5 2/3 innings. He has given up only one run on seven hits in 12 1/3 innings in spring training.

In hockey, the Kings are home for a game against the San Jose Sharks tonight.

The Kings have won four games in a row and are coming off a 4-2 win over the Nashville Predators on Saturday. Dustin Penner had a goal and an assist against the Predators.
