Foothill League Football Season Begins Tonight

khts_sportsThe Foothill League football season opens tonight with all six teams in action.

Valencia, the reigning Foothill League champion, host a much-improved West Ranch team tonight at Valencia High School.

Valencia is coming off a 28-10 loss to Loyola and has won only two preseason games.

West Ranch had a bye last week, but won its first four games of the season. The Wildcats lost to St. Francis, 35-0, two weeks ago.

The Canyon football team is undefeated at 5-0 and is home against Saugus. The Cowboys shut out Dos Pueblos 42-0 last week.

Saugus won three games in preseason, but lost to Woodland Hills Taft, 28-21, two weeks ago.

The Hart football team opens against Golden Valley at College of the Canyons. Hart has won four games in a row. Golden Valley went 1-4 in preseason. The Grizzlies’ only win was against Channel Islands.

The College of the Canyons football team travels to El Camino College for a game on Saturday night. COC lost to Grossmont College, 38-14, last week.

In high school cross country, the Golden Valley boys won the second Foothill League meet of the season at Central Park led by a trio of Grizzly runners.

Kristian Martinez won the race in 15 minutes, 14 seconds. Juan David Garcia was second, followed by Nolan Del Valle in third.

Saugus won the girls portion of the meet. Karis Frankian led a group of four girls from Saugus in the top five. She won the race in 17 minutes, 13 seconds.

Chelsey Totten of Golden Valley was second. Three girls from Saugus finished in third through fifth place.

In high school volleyball, the Golden Valley girls won their first Foothill League match in three years, beating Canyon in three games. Katie Nicholson led Golden Valley with nine kills and had nine digs.

The Valencia girls volleyball team beat Hart in four games. Serena Le Duff had eight kills, 15 digs and three aces for Valencia. Kathryn Cambra from Hart had 13 kills in the loss.

The Saugus girls swept West Ranch. Sarah Blomgren had 11 kills, seven digs and three blocks for Saugus, undefeated at 5-0 in league play.

The Santa Clarita Christian girls beat Faith Baptist in four games. Lette Blake had 10 kills and 19 assists for Santa Clarita Christian.

In hockey, the Kings lost to the Devils, 2-1, in a shootout. Simon Gagne scored his first goal as a King in the first period.

But the Devils beat the Kings, 2-0, in the shooutout.

The Kings are in Philadelphia for a game against the Flyers on Saturday night.
