Canyon hurdler Taylor Thomas looks like she is well on her way to winning the Foothill League titles in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. The reigning league champ in both events was the fastest in track and field preliminaries at College of the Canyons on Monday.
Saugus distance runner Stephanie Bulder might have some competition in the 1,600 from teammate Amber Murakami. Bulder won the league championship in the 1,600 last year, but she was second to Murakami in prelims.
Valencia’s Malcolm Flowers has the top time in the 400. He is the reigning 400 league champ and will be challenged by a pair of Golden Valley runners if he wants to repeat. Corey Chaison and Patrick Giles won their heat races during prelims in the 400.
The Foothill League track and field finals will take place on Thursday at COC’s Cougar Stadium.
The preliminary round of the Foothill League swim finals begin today at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center. All six teams from the Foothill League will be at the meet.
The West Ranch boys bring an undefeated league record and a perfect 8-0 dual meet record to the prelims.
The Hart girls are undefeated in league and are 7-0 on the season.
The finals are scheduled for Thursday at the Aquatic Center.
In college baseball, The Master’s College split a doubleheader with Biola over the weekend. The Master’s College lost the first game, 5-4, but won the nightcap, 12-4.
Joe Zeller hit his ninth home run of the season in the first game, but took the loss on the mound, giving up four runs in 6 2/3 innings.
Chris Talley and Caleb Mintz hit home runs for The Master’s College in the second game. Teammate Jared Otto drove in six runs.
The College of the Canyons softball team was knocked out of the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regional by Grossmont College. COC lost two games over the weekend and was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
Ninth-seeded COC lost the first game on Saturday, 6-5, and lost the second game on Sunday, 9-8, in the best of three series against eighth-seeded Grossmont.
The Lakers prepare for Game 2 of their NBA playoff series against the Utah Jazz with a gimpy Andrew Bynum. The Lakers center said he will put off knee surgery and play through the pain. He scored eight points and had 10 rebounds in 25 minutes against the Jazz in Game 1.
Game 2 is tonight at Staples Center.
The Dodgers welcome the Milwaukee Brewers to town with the start of three-game series tonight. While Manny Ramirez and Jeff Weaver will be playing in rehab assignments in San Bernardino to get off the disabled list, Rafael Furcal might be headed to the DL.
Furcal has been nursing a tender hamstring for about a week. No word from the Dodgers if he will be placed on the 15-day DL though.
Clayton Kershaw gets the start for the Dodgers. He will go up against Chris Narveson for the Brewers. Pregame starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
