Four SCV Baseball Players Selected In MLB draft

khts_sportsFour players from the Santa Clarita Valley were selected on the second day of the Major League Baseball draft.

Hart High graduate Trevor Brown was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 10th round of the draft. He is a catcher and infielder at UCLA and playing in the NCAA College World Series.

The Bruins play Texas Christian University in the Super Regionals starting on Friday.

Brown is hitting .322 with three home runs and 50 RBIs in 59 games for UCLA. He has a twin sister, Melissa, who is on the University of  Tennessee softball team.

College of the Canyons pitcher Cory Jones was picked by the St. Louis Cardinals in the fifth round. He is a graduate of Simi Valley High School and played for Pepperdine before transferring to COC.

The Detroit Tigers picked Charles Gillies, a pitcher at The Master’s College, in the 10th round. The West Ranch grad from Castaic was 8-6 with a 2.17 ERA for the Mustangs. He has 118 strikeouts in 99 2/3 innings pitched.

Valencia High senior Trey Williams was picked in the 11th round by the St. Louis Cardinals. He hit .378 with five home runs and 24 RBIs in his senior season.

He is committed to Pepperdine.

The third and final day of the draft is today.

In college softball, Hart High grad Jessica Shults had another big day at the plate in the NCAA Softball World Series, but her Oklahoma Sooners lost to Alabama, 8-6, in Game 2 of the series.

Shults drove in four runs and hit a three-run home run in a five-run seventh inning. She has six RBIS in the first two games of the series.

The third and deciding game of the series between Oklahoma and Alabama is tonight at 5.

In the NBA playoffs, the Boston Celtics are on the brink of advancing to the Finals after a 94-90 win over the Miami Heat.

The Celtics have a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference championship and are headed back to Boston for Game 6 on Thursday.

In hockey, the Kings can win their first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history tonight against the New Jersey Devils.

The Kings have a 3-0 lead in the series and are home at Staples Center for Game 4.
