Golden Valley Baseball Team Tops Saugus

khts_sportsThe Golden Valley baseball team showed some signs of life, beating Saugus, 5-3. Anthony San Miguel drove in three runs for Golden Valley.

Riley Sherwood was 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run. Ryan Alvarez doubled and scored twice for Golden Valley.

Justin Sheehan was 1-for-4 with a double and drove in two runs for Saugus. Andru Cardenas was 3-for-4 with two doubles and scored a run.

The Valencia baseball team won a nail-biter, 2-1, over West Ranch. Trey Williams and AJ Balta hit solo home runs in the first inning for Valencia.

West Ranch starter Ryan Keller went the distance, giving up only four hits and striking out five.

West Ranch scored its only run when Aaron Watkins drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning.

The Hart baseball team beat Canyon, 13-4, scoring five runs in the fifth inning.

Steve Russo capped the five-run fifth with a two-run double to give Hart a 7-1 lead. He was 2-for-2 and drove in four runs. Hart scored six more runs in the sixth inning.

Hart’s Luke Persico had three hits.

In college baseball, The Master’s College lost to Biola, 16-4. Biola, the No. 12 team in the NAIA, scored 10 runs in the second inning.

Bryan Lucas was 2-for-4 with a home run and drove in two runs. He hit his fourth home run of the season.

The West Ranch boys golf team won the Newhall Cup at TPC at Valencia shooting 794 in the two-day tournament. West Ranch won at least a share of all six Foothill League tournaments and won the league title for the fourth year in a row.

Jonathan Chang of Valencia won the individual Newhall Cup title finishing one stroke ahead of Zack Leonard of Saugus. Chang was the first-day leader at 2-over par 74. He shot a 5-over par 77 for a two-day total of 151.

Chang won the indvidual Newhall Cup championship for the second year in a row.

West Ranch’s JJ Holen won the Foothill League MVP and is one of seven golfers who qualified for CIF playoffs. West Ranch’s CJ Espino, Andrew Moore from Saugus, Daniel Kim and Glenn Lee from Valencia will join Leonard, Chang and Holen in the individual playoffs.

West Ranch, Valencia and Saugus earned bids for the team portion of the CIF playoffs.

The Valencia boys tennis team completed an undefeated season with a 15-3 win over West Ranch. Valencia’s No. 1 singles player JR Macalutas swept his three sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1.

Valencia went 10-0 in Foothill League play and is 19-0 overall.

In high school swimming, the Hart boys swim team beat Saugus, 121-49, at the Santa Clarita Aquatics Center. The Hart girls swim team won 119-51 over Saugus.

The Valencia boys swim team beat Canyon 116-54. The Valencia girls beat Canyon, 119½ to 50½.

In the NHL playoffs, the Boston Bruins beat the Montreal Canadiens, 4-3, in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

The Tampa Bay Lightning shut out the Pittsburgh Penguins, 1-0, to advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The Lakers are in New Orleans for Game 6 of the first round of the NBA playoffs. They have a 3-2 lead on the Hornets and can close out the series with a win tonight.

Kobe Bryant, hobbled with a sprained ankle, saw limited action in Game 5. He scored 19 points in 28 minutes.

Tipoff is scheduled for 5 tonight.
