Golden Valley Football Team Opens With Win Over Simi Valley

sportsgoldenvalleyThe Golden Valley football team is off to its best start in school history. The Grizzlies won their season opener, 31-19, over Simi Valley on Friday night.

Golden Valley has its first winning record since opening the 2008 season 2-1 and snapped a 15-game losing streak.

Trailing Simi Valley by one point, Golden Valley scored 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to win the game.

 

Golden Valley quarterback Reid Soliman threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run.

Golden Valley running back Earl Johnson scored on a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter to give the Grizzlies the lead. Jeff Coprich, who rushed for a game-high 165 yards on 20 carries, padded Golden Valley’s lead with a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

The Saugus football team got some fourth-quarter heroics from quarterback Jared Carbajal. He hit Denley Rodriguez with a 3-yard touchdown pass to give Saugus a 26-20 win over Burroughs.

Carbajal only completed five passes for 36 yards in the game, but he rushed for 132 yards on 18 carries.

Hart won its season opener, 21-7, over El Camino Real. Junior quarterback Cory Mayes threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns as Hart avenged last year’s season-opening loss to El Camino.

Mayes spread the ball around nicely, hitting three different receivers for touchdowns. Matt Ritz and Anthony Arriaran caught TD passes in the first half. Tim White capped the scoring with a fourth-quarter touchdown reception from 7 yards out.

West Ranch was the only team from the Foothill League that lost its season opener. West Ranch quarterback Connor Eichten struggled to find a rhythm, completing only two of his first 10 passes, in his team’s 39-14 loss to Nordhoff.

Sophomore Rawston Redick scored West Ranch’s first touchdown of the season on a 95-yard kick-off return. Running back Ben Milleman scored a third-quarter touchdown on a 1-yard run for West Ranch’s other score.

In college football, UCLA lost its season opener, 31-22, to Kansas State. UCLA trailed Kansas State by two points, 24-22, with just over a minute to play in the game. UCLA tried a two-point conversion after scoring a touchdown to get within two, but failed on the conversion.

Kansas State drove down the field and iced the game with its second touchdown of the fourth quarter.

UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince scored on an 11-yard run in the second quarter, but was only 9-of-26 for 120 yards passing. Kicker Kai Forbath connected on three field goals, including a 44-yarder that gave UCLA a 10-7 lead in the second quarter.

Third-ranked Boise State rallied in the fourth quarter for a 33-30 win over No. 10 Virginia Tech at FedEx Field in Maryland last night.

Down by four points in the fourth quarter, Boise State took the lead on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Kellen Moore to Austin Petis with just over a minute to play in the game.

Boise State scored 17 points in the first quarter and had a 20-14 lead at halftime. Moore threw for 215 yards and three touchdowns.

It looks like a visit from the Dodgers was all the San Diego Padres needed to snap their 10-game losing streak.

The Padres beat the Dodgers, 4-2, and maintained their lead in the National League West standings by one game over the San Francisco Giants.

Nick Hundley hit a solo home run in the third inning to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. Hundley went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Scott Podsednik hit his first home run as a Dodger, a solo shot in the seventh inning to cut the Padres lead to one run, 3-2. The Padres tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning.

The Dodgers and Padres continue their three-game series tonight in San Diego. Clayton Kershaw will start for the Dodgers against Mat Latos for the Padres. Pregame starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
