An unexpected hail storm suspended play at the Southern California Golf Association/CIF tournament yesterday in Murrieta. J.J. Holen of West Ranch, the only player from the Foothill League in the tournament, completed only five holes when play was suspended. He is 2-over par and six shots off the lead. Mario Clemens of Beverly Hills High is the leader through five holes at 4-under par.
It is expected the top-six individual golfers, along with the top three teams in the SCGA/CIF tournament, will qualify for the state tournament at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach on June 10.
The SCGA/CIF tournament resumes today.
In high school softball, Hart’s Jessica Shults and Valencia’s Carly Mortensen will share Foothill League Player of the Year honors.
Shults, a senior heading to Oklahoma in the fall, led her team to the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs. She hit a solo home run in the first round and drove in two of the three runs her team scored in playoffs.
Mortensen, a freshman, was 17-4 with a 1.15 ERA and 160 strikeouts. Two of her wins came against Foothill League rivals and co-champs Hart.
