Hart Baseball Team Beats Canyon, Moves Into Tie For First Place

khts_sportsThe Hart baseball team slipped past Canyon, 2-1, and is tied for first place in the Foothill League standings with four games to play.

Steve Rosso drove in two runs with a double in the sixth inning to give Hart a come-from-behind win. Pinch-runner Josh Brown and Baggio Saldivar scored on the double by Rosso.

Canyon took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning on a RBI double by Harry Bennett.

Across town at West Ranch High School, Valencia lost to West Ranch, 3-1, to drop the Vikings into a first-place with Hart.

West Ranch scored three runs in the fifth inning and starter JC Cloney pitched a complete game to hand Valencia its third Foothill League loss of the season.

Matt Blake drove in two runs in the fifth inning to give West Ranch a 3-1 lead.

Cloney gave up one run on five hits and struck out eight. He didn’t walk a single batter.

Valencia starter Quincy Quintero pitched six innings, giving up three runs on six hits and striking out one.

Hart and Valencia are tied with 8-3 records. Valencia plays Saugus twice this week. Hart and West Ranch meet for a pair of games later in the week.

The Saugus baseball team clobbered Golden Valley, 20-4, scoring 11 runs in the second inning. Roy Verdejo hit a three-run home run and Austin Rodriguez belted a solo shot to lead off the inning for Saugus.

Saugus sent 14 batters to the plate in the second inning. The Centurions collected six hits, two home runs and walked four times. Nick Lombardi hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning. He was 3-for-4 and drove in four runs.

Ryan Alvarez was 2-for-3 with a home run, a triple and drove in two runs for Golden Valley.

Valencia High graduate Shane Vereen was selected by the New England Patriots in the NFL draft. Vereen, a running back at Cal, was the 56th overall pick and taken in the second round.

He rushed for 1,167 yards and scored 16 touchdowns in his junior season at Cal. The Patriots also selected LSU running back Stevan Ridley.

The Valencia boys volleyball team reached the quarterfinals of the Redondo Union Tournament, losing in two games to Mira Costa.

Mira Costa won the gold division of the tournament, beating San Clemente in two games in the champiolnship match.

In auto racing, Canyon High graduate Greg Purlsey won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah. It was his second win of the season and his fourth win in the past six West Series races.

RJ Johnson of Canyon Country, making his West Series debut, finished 14th.

At Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, Connor Cantrell of Valencia posted his second top-five finish of the season in the NASCAR Super Trucks. He was fourth in Saturday night’s race at the track. Acton’s Kenny Maler was right behind him in fifth place. Todd Cameron of Monrovia won the Super Trucks race.

The California Heat Peewee ice hockey team raised their state and national championship banners at the Valencia Ice Station over the weekend. The Heat won the Tier II Divison 3A national championship with four players from the Santa Clarita Valley on the team.

The Lakers begin their NBA playoff series with the Dallas Mavericks tonight at Staples Center. All attention is on Kobe Bryant’s injured ankle. He sprained his ankle in Game 5 of the Lakers’ series against the New Orlenas Hornets.

He is expected to play, but how effective he’ll be is the question everyone is asking.

The Mavericks beat the Portland Trail Blazers in six games in the first round of the NBA playoffs.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 tonight.
