Hart Basketball Team Reaches Championship Game of Watts Games

The Hart basketball team is in the championship game of the Watts Games after a 58-49 victory over Westchester.

Lewis Stallworth scored 24 points for Hart in the semifinal game at Dorsey High. The Indians beat Redondo Union in the quarterfinals.

Hart plays Compton in the championship game at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday.

In track and field, West Ranch graduate and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo freshman Nick Bultman won the hammer throw in the young men’s division at the USA Track and Field Southern California championships at Cerritos College. He won with a throw of 195 feet, 6 inches.

His younger brother, Nathan Bultman, a junior at West Ranch, won the intermediate boys division title in the hammer throw with a personal best 153 feet, 1 ½ inches.

In auto racing, Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley turned in a pair of top-10 finishes in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West over the weekend in the Midwest.

He was fourth in the Casey’ General Store 150 at Iowa Speedway on Friday night.

He followed with a ninth-place finish in the Toyota/G-Oil 150 at Lebanon I-44 Speedway in Missouri on Sunday.

Michael Self, a driver from Park City, Utah, won both races.

Pursley is in fourth place in the K&N Pro Series West standings after five races. He has won one race and has three top-five finishes.

In the Izod IndyCar Series, Alex Tagliani, driving for the Barracuda Racing team owned by Valencia’s Bryan Herta, was 22nd in the Firestone 550 at Texas Motor Speedway. It was the third race in a row Tagliani has finished outside the top 20.

Helio Castroneves won the race at Texas Motor Speedway. He leads the IndyCar Series standings after eight races.

The next race is the Milwaukee Indy Fest on Saturday.

In baseball, the Dodgers lost to the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-4. The Diamondbacks scored four runs in the ninth inning to take the lead. They have beaten the Dodgers six times in seven games this season and are 16-3 in their past 19 games.

But there was some good news. Yasiel Puig got another three hits and has an even .500 batting average. The bad news, the Dodgers have a three-game losing streak.

Game 2 of the series between the Dodgers and the Diamondbacks is tonight at Dodger Stadium.

Listen to the game on AM 1220, KHTS. First pitch is at 7:10.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
