Hart, Canyon Football Teams Renew Rivalry With Foothill League Title On The Line

khts_sportsThe Hart and Canyon football teams never need much motivation when they play each other. The two teams have the longest rivalry in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The winner of tonight’s game at Canyon High School will have an inside track to the Foothill League championship.

Canyon and Hart are tied for first place in league with Valencia and Saugus. Canyon narrowly escaped with a 13-7 win over West Ranch last week. Cowboys receiver Coley Apsay caught the game-winning touchdown with 17 seconds to play in the game.

Hart is coming off a stunning, 19-14, win over Valencia. Indians receiver Tim White came through with two big plays in the final two minutes of the game and scored the winning touchdown on a 40-yard reception.

Listen to the game between Hart and Canyon tonight on AM 1220, KHTS. Kickoff is set for 7:30.

Valencia will look to rebound after losing to Hart last week and seeing its 13-game league winning streak snapped. The Vikings are home against Golden Valley, a team still in search of its first Foothill League win.

The Saugus football team takes on a dangerous West Ranch team at College of the Canyons. Saugus beat Golden Valley, 36-27, last week, to stay in contention for the Foothill League championship.

The Trinity Classical Academy football team shut out Westmark, 61-0, to clinch the Omega League championship for the second year in a row.

In high school tennis, Rebecca Ho from Golden Valley won the Foothill League championship, defeating Ana Cecilia Fuentes from West Ranch in the final, 6-2, 6-1.

Valencia’s Shenelle Trujllo and Michelle Savage won the Foothill League doubles championship, 6-4, 6-1.

In high school cross country, the Golden Valley boys won their first Foothill League championship behind a course-record performance by their top runner, Kristian Martinez. He won the league championship race in a 15 minutes, 31.88 seconds at Central Park.

The Saugus girls won their sixth Foothill League championship in a row behind senior Karis Frankian, who won in 17 minutes, 59.06 seconds.

In college basketball, The Master’s College won its season opener, 68-63, over Northwest Christian.

Devin Dyer led The Master’s College with 12 points.

In hockey, the Kings were shut out by the Edmonton Oilers, 3-0. The Kings lost their third game in a row and were shut out twice in a row for the first time since moving into Staples Center.

The Oilers won their sixth game in a row. Former King Ryan Smyth scored the first goal for the Oilers in the second period.

Next up for the Kings are the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night at Staples Center.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
