In high school basketball, Myron Watkins was introduced as new the Golden Valley boys basketball coach. He takes over for Chris Printz, who led Golden Valley to the CIF Southern Section Division III-A semifinals last year.

Golden Valley has won the past two Foothill League championships and has a 51-10 record over the past two seasons.

Watkins was the interim head coach when Printz resigned over the summer. Watkins was the Golden Valley junior varsity coach and a varsity assistant coach for the past two seasons.

In high school volleyball, the West Ranch girls beat Rio Mesa in three games. Angel Rutledge led West Ranch with 12 kills and five blocks.

The Saugus girls swept Highland in three games. Saugus setter Ashley Guthrie had 39 assists and Sara Blomgren had 10 kills.

The Master College women’s volleyball team lost to Vanguard in three games. Sam Dougherty had a team-high 10 kills and 11 digs for The Master’s College. Tori Callihan had eight kills and two blocks. The Master’s College is 0-3 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.

The Dodgers squeaked past the San Francisco Giants, 1-0, behind a four-hitter from Clayton Kershaw.

Kershaw struck out three and didn’t walk a batter in winning his 12th game of the season.

Reed Johnson scored the only run of the game on an error in the sixth inning.

It looks like the Dodgers will be without leftfielder Scott Podsednik for the rest of the season. He has an injured foot that will sideline him for the next two weeks. There are only 20 games left in the season.

He is reportedly headed to Dallas for a second opinion. It is expected that Jay Gibbons will play in left field if Podsednik is unable to finish the season.

The Dodgers and Giants continue their series tonight. It will be Chad Billingsley for the Dodgers against Matt Cain for the Giants. Pregame starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
