Hart High Graduate, UCLA pitcher Trevor Bauer Wins Golden Spikes Award

khts_sportsHart High graduate Trevor Bauer, a pitcher at UCLA, won the Golden Spikes Award for the top amateur baseball player in the nation.

Bauer joins an impressive list of baseball players who have won the award in recent years. Bryce Harper, Stephen Strasburg and Buster Posey received the previous three Golden Spikes Awards.

Bauer, a junior a UCLA, was 13-2 with a 1.25 ERA last season for the Bruins. He led the nation and set the Pac-10 record with 203 strikeouts. Bauer was the third overall selection in the Major League Baseball draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Bases Loaded Academy Rage Blue 10 and under baseball team won its third tournament of the summer. The Rage Blue team won a tournament in Sylmar over the weekend, beating the Coyotes, 14-0, in the championship game.

Pitcher Tony Jacob threw a no-hitter in the championship game and Danny Wlodychak was the MVP for Rage Blue in the Sylmar tournament.

The team has also won tournaments in Ventura and Hacienda Heights. Jacob was the MVP of the Hacienda Heights tournament and Jacob Beauchamp was the MVP of the Ventura tournament.

Next up for the Rage Blue team is a tournament in Simi Valley starting Aug. 6.

In baseball, the Indians swept a doubleheader against the Twins, winning the first game, 5-2, and the nightcap 6-3. In other games, the Yankees beat the Rays, 5-4, on a bases-loaded walk by Russell Martin in the ninth inning. The Red Sox pounded the Orioles, 15-10, and the White Sox beat the Royals, 5-2.

In the National League, the Diamondbacks shut out the Brewers, 3-0, the Braves beat the Rockies, 7-4, the Nationals beat the Astros, 5-2, the Cubs beat the Phillies, 6-1, the Pirates shut out the Reds, 2-0, and the Marlins beat the Mets, 4-1.
