The Hart PONY Mustang baseball team lost its first game, 5-4, to Joliet, Ill., in the World Series in Irving, Texas.

Hart had a 4-0 lead, but Joliet scored four runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. Joliet then plated the game-winning run in the sixth inning.

Noah Cardenas and Caden Miller each had two hits for Hart.

Joliet and Los Mochis from Mexico each won their first games. They lead the Orange Division with 1-0 records. Hart and Keller, Texas, each have 0-1 records in the Orange Division.

Hart plays Keller today on the second day of the Mustang World Series.

Caguas from Puerto Rico and the Chesterfield, Va., team won their first games in the World Series. They lead the White Division with 1-0 records.

In swimming, Hart High graduate Chelsea Griffiths from the Canyons Aquatics Club posted the 133^rd best time in the 200-meter backstroke on the second day of the Conoco Phillips National Championships in Irvine.

Natalie Coughlin, an 11-time Olympic medalist and the American record holder in the 100 backstroke, won the final.

Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps won two events at the national championships. He won the 200 freestyle and the 200 butterfly.

World record holder Aaron Peirsol was upset in the 100 backstroke. He lost to David Plummer by three-hundredths of a second. It was the first time since 2000 that Peirsol did not win the 100 backstroke at the national meet.

The national championships continue today with five events, including the 100-meter breaststroke. Hart High graduate Jordan Danny and Golden Valley High graduate Michelle Duraj will be swimming in the 100 breaststroke today.

In basketball, Shaquille O’Neal will play for the Boston Celtics next season. He reportedly signed a two-year deal to play for the Celtics, the hated rivals of the Los Angeles Lakers.

O’Neal was a Laker and won three NBA championships in his stint in Los Angeles.

The Dodgers showed some signs of life last night, crushing the first-place San Diego Padres, 9-0.

Dodgers starter Vicente Padilla took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. He tossed a two-hit shutout and was 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate. He struck out nine and walked two.

Ryan Theriot and Scott Podsednik, two of the newest Dodgers, contributed nicely. Each drove in two runs.

The Dodgers scored five runs in the eighth inning capped by a solo home run by Andre Ethier.

But it wasn’t all good news for the Dodgers. Catcher Russell Martin landed on the 15-day disabled list with a torn labrum in his right hip.

The Dodgers and Padres conclude their series tonight. It will be Chad Billingsley for the Dodgers against Kevin Correia for the Padres. Pregame starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
