In auto racing, the Firestone Indy Lights Series heads to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for the ninth race of the season.

The two drivers for Bryan Herta Autosport, Stefan Wilson and Sebastian Saavedra, have raced at Mid-Ohio in the past. Wilson posted a top-10 finish, rallying from 17th to eighth place.

Saavedra did not fare as well at the road course. He started 10th in last year’s race, but finished a disappointing 18th.

Saavedra is in fifth place and Wilson is in sixth place in the Indy Lights standings after eight races. JK Vernay leads the Indy Lights standings with five races remaining.

In the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley and the rest of the West Series drivers are heading Montana Raceway Park for the first time. Pursley is ninth in the West Series standings and has four top-10 finishes in seven races.

Eric Holmes leads the West Series standings. He is the only driver with multiple wins in the West Series with two.

The Montana race is the eighth of the 12-race West Series schedule.

In basketball, Shannon Brown is returning to the Lakers and getting a little raise to boot. Brown reportedly signed a two-year contract worth $4.6 million.

Brown was considering offers from the New York Knicks and the New Orleans Hornets, but ultimately decided on returning to the Lakers with a chance to win three straight NBA championships.

The Dodgers might be without the services of catcher Russell Martin for the rest of the season. Martin went on the 15-day disabled list with an injured hip. The injury might require surgery that would sideline him for the rest of the season. The Dodgers and Martin are awaiting the results of a CT scan to determine if he needs season-ending surgery.

On the field, the Dodgers had their chances, but lost to the San Diego Padres, 5-0, and dropped eight games out of first place in the National League West standings.

The Dodgers collected nine hits, all singles, but left nine runners on base. Ryan Theriot was 3-for-4 and Andre Ethier was 2-for-3 with walk, but the Dodgers failed to score.

Pinch-hitter Chris Denorfia hit an inside-the-park, two-run home run in the ninth inning that put the Padres up 5-0.

The Dodgers start a weekend series with the Washington Nationals tonight at Dodger Stadium. It will be Clayton Kershaw for the Dodgers against John Lannan for the Nationals. Pregame starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
