Hart PONY Mustang Team Headed To National Youth Baseball Championships

khts_sportsThe Hart Mustang baseball team, fresh off winning the PONY World Series in Texas, will head to the National Youth Baseball Championships for the second year in a row.

The Hart team beat Caguas from Puerto Rico, 7-2, in the championship game of the Mustang World Series.

The National Youth Baseball championships start Aug. 25 in Memphis, Tenn.

In softball, Saugus grad Jenna Kelly led the So Cal Athletics in the Premier Girls Fastpitch national championship game, 8-7, over the Worth Firecrackers in Irvine.

Kelly homered, scored two runs and walked twice. She hit three home runs and had six RBIs in 11 games at the national tournament.

West Ranch’s Janelle Lindvall, playing for the Worth Firecrackers, had a double in the championship game. She hit .385 and drove in five runs in nine games at the tournament.

In baseball, the Yankees roughed up the Angels and starter Garrett Richards, who was making his major league debut in hallowed Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees beat the Angels, 9-3, and scored six runs in five innings against Richards. Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano came within a single of the cycle. He homered, doubled, tripled, scored two runs and drove in two.

In other games, the Mariners squeaked past the Rangers, 4-3, and the Blue Jays beat the A’s, 8-4.

The White Sox beat the Orioles, 6-4 in 10 innings, the Indians clobbered the Tigers, 10-3, the Rays beat the Royals, 8-7, and the Twins beat the Red Sox, 5-2.

In the National League, the Diamondbacks beat the Astros, 6-3, the Pirates jumped all over the Giants, 9-2, the Reds slipped past the Rockies, 3-2, and the Padres beat the Mets, 9-5.

The Braves beat the Marlins, 6-2, the Cubs doubled up on the Nationals, 4-2, and the Brewers beat the Cardinals, 5-1.
