Hart Stuns Golden Valley 34-27 In Foothill League Classic

The Golden Valley Grizzlies were in control en route to their first win over the Hart Indians in program history, up 27-20 with the ball on the one yard line and under six minutes to play in regulation. Then, chaos ensued, and everything that could go wrong did go wrong.

Hart has ripped the hearts out of the Golden Valley Grizzlies, once  again. Forgive the pun.

Two years ago (and on the very same field), the Indians downed the Grizzlies in double overtime in what was one of the most exciting games of the 2015 season. These two teams are making a habit of thrilling games, and a rivalry is brewing.

Tonight, Hart and GV took part in an instant classic, undoubtedly the best KHTS Game of the Week.

And it was a game Golden Valley had complete control of until midway through the fourth quarter.

The Grizzlies got off to a strong start thanks to swiss army knife De’Gabriel Floyd. After the first quarter it was Floyd 12, Hart 0. The junior USC-commit threw a 27 yard touchdown pass to Jalin Lewis (which turned out to be his only attempt until the last play of the game), and then scooped up a Hart fumble on the ensuing drive for a 63 yard score. Golden Valley would miss both extra point attempts, but held firm to the lead through the first half.

Ben Rosen scored for the Indians in the second quarter, Jalin Lewis would respond for the Grizzlies, and the teams would go into the half 19-7.

Hart’s offense would come alive in the second half, thanks to great efforts by senior wideout DJ Palmer. Palmer scored on receiving touchdowns of 55 in the third quarter and 73 yards at the start of the fourth to give the Indians their first lead of the game, 20-19.

De’Gabriel Floyd took over on the next drive and scored on an eight yard run, and a 2-point conversion put the Grizzlies back up a full touchdown, 27-20 with 8:31 to play in the game. Floyd would finish with one passing touchdown, one fumble recovery for touchdown and a rushing touchdown. He gained 161 total yards on the night.

Then, chaos and the craziest Foothill League finish in years ensued.

JT Shrout connected with DJ Palmer for three second half touchdowns, but non bigger than the last one with 1:31 seconds to play in regulation, a 64 yard catch and run for DJ Palmer (four catches four 230 yards). That came after a series of events that saw a Golden Valley touchdown, JT Shrout interception, and subsequent goalline stand and blocked field goal by Hart that kept it a one score game with under 4 minutes left.

With the score tied at 27-27, Golden Valley had what seemed to be one last chance at a game-winning drive, but the Grizzlies failed to move the ball and were forced to punt.

That turned out to be a hefty price to pay.

A poor, 27-yard punt resulted in Davon Jones fielding with space to run, and he was off to the races. Jones took it back 75 yards to the house to with just 13 seconds left to put the Indians up for good, making it 14 points in the final 91 seconds. A horrifying finish to the fourth quarter for the Grizzlies on halloween weekend.

The Indians move to 6-3 and 3-1 on the season, alone in second place in the Foothill League and setting up the final game of the regular season next week against Saugus, the last KHTS Game of the Week for the 2017 season.

The Grizzlies look to rebound against the reeling West Ranch Wildcats with much to play for as a seeded position in the Division 6 playoffs is still up for grabs. Golden Valley is the third ranked team in the division.
