Hart’s Rodino Throws No-Hitter In CIF Softball Playoffs

The Hart softball team is headed to the final four of the CIF-Southern Section Division I playoffs after a 1-0 win over visiting Esperanza yesterday.

Destiny Rodino threw a no-hitter, striking out 13 Esperanza batters and walking none. Only two Esperanza players reached base, both on errors. It was Rodino’s third shutout of the playoffs.

Melissa Brown scored the only run of the game in the first inning. Jessica Shults drove her in with a double to leftfield.

Rodino has not given up a run in 28 consecutive innings. In addition to throwing three straight shutouts in playoffs, she shut out Golden Valley, 8-0, in the Foothill League finale. The last time she gave up a run was in the sixth inning against Valencia on May 12. Valencia scored twice in the sixth inning and won that game, 2-0.

Hart will play Norco on Tuesday in the semifinals. Norco beat Thousand Oaks, 7-1, in their quarterfinal game.

In high school track and field, seven athletes from the Foothill League are headed to today’s Masters Meet at Cerritos College. Saugus is sending five, including sophomore Kaylin Mahoney who won the CIF-Southern Section Division II championship in the 3,200. Valencia is sending two. Senior Aly Drake is the Division I champion in the 800.

In high school volleyball, Valencia’s John Souisa is the Foothill League Player of the Year.

In women’s soccer, the Premier Soccer Santa Clarita Valley Rooks will have their home opener at Canyon High School on Saturday. The Rooks, making their debut in the Women’s Professional Soccer League, are playing the West Coast Football Club. Game time is at 5.
