The Michael Hoefflin Foundation charity soccer match at College of the Canyons was another success on Saturday evening, with all proceeds benefitting the Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Children’s Cancer. Despite the local road closures from the AMGEN Tour race, and the chance of rain, legions of fans showed up to support MLS club Chivas USA as they took on the Columbus Crew in a pre-season exhibition game at Cougar Stadium. The Crew defeated Chivas 2-1 with most of the action in the first half of the game, as rain settle in for the second half.
The action started early on when Chivas forward Atiba Harris scored the first goal of the match in the 7th minute on a steal from Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum. Columbus answered in the 37th minute with a goal from forward Brad Evans to tie the game at 1-1 entering the half. Columbus got the game-winning goal from substitute forward Robbie Rogers less than six minutes into the second half on a beautiful cut-back from the near side of the goal box. The only card in the game was a yellow card to veteran midfielder Sacha Kljestan midway through the second frame.
The game was broadcast live on KHTS for the first time ever, and will be available to download in the podcast section of hometownstation.com on Tuesday. For more information, or to make a donation to the Michael Hoefflin Foundation, go to www.mhf.org or call 661-250-4100.
