Holen, Lee Shoot 4-Over In First Round Of USGA Junior Amateur Golf Championship

khts_sportsValencia’s Daniel Lee and West Ranch’s JJ Holen each shot 4-over 76s in the first round of the USGA Junior Amateur Championship at Egypt Valley Country Club in Michigan.

CJ Espino, Holen’s teammate at West Ranch High School, shot an 89 in the first round of the tournament.

Lee and Holen are in a tie for 91st place. Three players are tied for the lead at 5-under par. Jordan Spieth, the reigning USGA Junior Amateur champion from Texas, Stephen Behr and Davis Womble each shot 67s in the opening round of the tournament.

Holen had five bogeys and one birdie. His lone birdie came on the 17th hole, a 521-yard par 5.

Lee had three bogeys, one double bogey and a birdie. He bogeyed three of the first four holes and had a double bogey on the third hole. After starting his round 5-over par after four holes, Lee settled down and made par on 13 of the final 14 holes. He birdied the 14th hole, a 385-yard par 4.

The second round of the USGA Junior Amateur is today.

In the Valley Invitational Baseball League, Hart ended the regular season with a 9-4 win over visiting Agoura.

Hart scored four runs in the fourth inning to blow open a close game and take an 8-2 lead. Dallas Bacon was 3-for-5 with two doubles and drove in five runs. Steven Rosso was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Hart finishes the summer baseball league with a five-game winning streak and a 14-9 record.

Valencia beat Chaminade, 11-1, behind five shutout innings from starter Jake Roberge. He gave up two hits and struck out two.

Trey Williams was 4-for-4 with a home run and drove in five runs. He hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning. Shane Zeile followed with a solo home run to give his team a 10-0 lead.

Valencia finished the regular season with a 13-5 record and tied for second place in the Valley Invitational League standings.

West Ranch lost to Granada Hills, 3-0. Hunter Hernandez was 2-for-4 for West Ranch, which finished in third place in the summer league standings with a 12-6 record.

Golden Valley lost to Mission Valley, 11-5. Tanner Swire was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two walks and scored two runs.

Golden Valley finished with an 8-11 record.

The Dodgers lost to the visiting Giants, 5-2, and are slowing slipping out of contention in the National League West standings.

The Dodgers have lost five straight games since the All-Star break. They are in fourth place in the NL West standings, six games behind the first-place San Diego Padres.

The Dodgers continue their series against the Giants tonight. It will be Clayton Kershaw for the Dodgers against Tim Lincecum for the Giants. Pregame starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
