Valencia High graduate Max Homa took the reigning U.S. Golf Association’s Amateur champion to the limit, but fell short in the quaterfinals.
Homa, a sophomore at UC Berkeley, lost to Ben An of Fullerton, 1-up, missing a long birdie putt on the 18th hole that would have tied the match at the Chambers Bay course in University Place, Wash.
Homa started the tournament in a tie for second place after the first round of stroke play. He made the cut and advanced to the match play rounds, winning three rounds before meeting An in the quarterfinals.
David Chung of Fayateville, N.C., defeated An in the semifinals.
Peter Uihlein of Orlando, Fla., defeated Chung in the final match, 4 and 2, to win the USGA Amateur championship.
