Homa Reaches Quarterfinals Of USGA Amateur Championship

khts_sportsValencia High graduate Max Homa took the reigning U.S. Golf Association’s Amateur champion to the limit, but fell short in the quaterfinals.

Homa, a sophomore at UC Berkeley, lost to Ben An of Fullerton, 1-up, missing a long birdie putt on the 18th hole that would have tied the match at the Chambers Bay course in University Place, Wash.

Homa started the tournament in a tie for second place after the first round of stroke play. He made the cut and advanced to the match play rounds, winning three rounds before meeting An in the quarterfinals.

David Chung of Fayateville, N.C., defeated An in the semifinals.

Peter Uihlein of Orlando, Fla., defeated Chung in the final match, 4 and 2, to win the USGA Amateur championship.

In auto racing, Bryan Herta Autosport driver Stefan Wilson posted the best finish on an oval track in his Firestone Indy Lights career at Chicagoland Speedway.

He finished sixth after qualifying 10th and spinning out midway through the race.

Teammate Sebastian Saavedra finished 11th, falling victim to a failed fuel pump. He qualified third, but slowly faded as the race unfolded. He finished the race, but was three laps down to the leaders.

James Hinchcliffe won the Indy Lights race. J.K. Vernay, the leader in the Indy Lights standings, finished fourth.

The Dodgers lost to the Colorado Rockies, 10-5, and dropped two of three games in the weekend series.

It most likely was the last time anyone will see Manny Ramirez in a Dodgers uniform. He came in as a pinch-hitter and was ejected from the game for arguing balls and strikes.

Several sources have Ramirez headed to the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox claimed him on waivers last week and the Dodgers have little interest in keeping him on their team.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Dodgers, the fourth-place team in the National League West standings, 10 games behind the San Diego Padres.

The Phillies start a three-game series tonight at Dodger Stadium. It will be Hiroki Kuroda for the Dodgers against Roy Halladay for the Phillies. Pregame starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
