Foothill League boy’s basketball started their second trip through league play on Friday night. Well, most of the teams did. In the most anticipated game of the year to date, Valencia took sole possession of first in league with a 68-60 win over Saugus. Golden Valley nearly erased a 24-point deficit, but the Hart Indians pulled away late to get back to .500 in league with a 67-56 victory. Canyon was looking for redemption against a West Ranch team that defeated the Cowboys on opening night, but that game will have to wait after a leak in the gym caused all games to be postponed. In girl’s action, Hart knocked off Golden Valley, 52-47. Valencia handed Hart the league lead by defeating Saugus, 56-50.
As a result of the weather, all soccer games were also postponed from Friday. Decisions on Tuesday’s games will be made tomorrow afternoon.
Congratulations to Hart senior Delano Howell, the 2007 CIF Northern Division Football Player of the Year. The Stanford bound Howell edged out the nation’s top prep recruit, Darrell Scott of St. Bonaventure for the award. Scott was relegated to the first team offense. Also on offense from Santa Clarita: Hart QB B.R. Holbrook, Saugus running back Ryan Zirbel, Valencia wide receiver Stephen London, Stanford bound Canyon lineman A.J. Wallerstein, and UNLV bound Saugus lineman Shane Watterson. Valencia linebacker Mike Lien was also on the offense, because there were no more spots left on the defensive team. Making first team defense: Canyon corner Stephen Wirthlin, UCLA bound Hart linebacker Patrick Larimore and Hart safety Johnny MacArthur, Canyon lineman Mike Spagnola, and Saugus linebackers Justin McKillop and Nick Green.
The Eastern Conference defeated the Western Conference, 8-7 at the NHL All-Star Game. Kings center Anze Kopitar did not tally a point in the game. The Kings pick up action tomorrow night at 3:30pm, when they travel to Philadelphia live on KHTS.
