Other winners included Tim Smith, Rich Delong III and Dylan Baker. Eric Richardson lowered the CITGO Late Model track record to 18.462 a lap.
Mayhew ran a nearly flawless race in the first NASCAR CITGO Lubricants Late Models 35. Mayhew led all 35 laps of the caution-free affair, lapping up to sixth place and taking a 3.181 second win. The balance of the top-six included cousins and former Mesa Marin champions Brian and Eric Richardson, ahead of teammate Johnny White, Cole Custer, and Josh Horn.
“We don’t get races like that when the car is that good, so when we can take em, we’ll take em,” Mayhew said. “We just hit the car just right. The last couple of months have been a dogfight every week.”
Custer led the opening lap of the second 35 lap race before being passed by White. Custer went side-by-side with Eric Richardson before Richardson spun in turns one and two. Richardson lost three laps in the pits changing both rear tires.
Johnny White paced David Mayhew and Brian Richardson through heavy lapped traffic with Mayhew jumping inside White on several occasions to challenge for the lead.
Paul Ebersbacher spun on lap 24 to bring out a caution with 11 to go, and White slowed dramatically on the restart with a flat tire to hand the lead to Mayhew. Mayhew took control of the race to carry a three second lead before a caution on lap 32 for Cole Custer spinning with contact from Brian Richardson.
Mayhew pulled away from Brian Richardson on the final restart to take the win for his 15th win with Robby Sawyer scoring a third place finish.
Upland’s Donny St. Ours set fast time in both the Pro Late Models and Mini Stocks, in his debut in that class. Points leader Tim Smith became the first repeat winner of 2013 in the NASCAR Pro Late Models, leading all 50 laps to pull away from Ryan Reed and Donny St. Ours for the six second victory. Reed was placed at the end of the finishing order for failing to report to tech inspection.
Second in Mini Stock points Dylan Baker used a last lap pass to take his second victory in the division. Randy Smith led the first two laps before Baker led laps three through 23 with St. Ours on his tail. St. Ours took the lead on lap 24 but Baker remained in pursuit.
Baker made his move on the white flag lap to a thrilling .321 second win over St. Ours with Randy Smith rounding out the top-three.
“That was the best race I’ve ever been in,” Baker said. “I need to start getting a little more aggressive so I did what I could.”
It was a father and son duel between Rich Delong III and his father Rich Delong, Jr. in the Street Stock 25 lap main event. It was the Castaic driver Rich Delong III holding off “pops” to continue a perfect three-for-three this year. Perrin Koostra rounded out the top-three finishers with only one second between the group.
