Fueled by Monster Energy, the SRL S2 Series and INEX / SRL LEgends will race in the three divisions on the brand-new speedway.
The events scheduled for Saturday night will mark round eight of the 2013 SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour. Twenty -five teams are entered in the 100 lap contest. There are nearly $40,000 in awards and up to $5,000 to the race winner.
Among the entries is series points leader Jim Pettit of Prunedale, with two wins and nearly 300 laps led this season. Pettit won the NASCAR Pro Late Model event at Kern Raceway on August 10th and won the NASCAR Southwest Series race at the Mesa Marin Raceway in May of 2005.
Mesa Marin hosted the SRL series five times before closing in 2005, while the NASCAR Southwest Series was a mainstay at the former half-mile venue with over 50 events held there. Pettit is the only former Mesa Marin touring series winner entered in Saturday’s races but he will have to contend with 2012 series champion Derek Thorn and 2004 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion Greg Pursley.
Thorn, currently residing in Bakersfield, is the leading race winner in series history with 15 wins in a short 37 race career. He is also the leading pole earner with 19 fast-times. His 2013 campaign sees him leading the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, West standings while also scoring four wins in the SRL this season in a limited schedule of five appearances.
Parker, Arizona’s Pursley will be making just his second SRL start of 2013 on Saturday night driving for Gene Price Motorsports. Pursley steered the Gene Price Motorsports #26 Ford to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, West championship in 2011 and is a 16 time K&N West race winner. He currently ranks fourth in the 2013 K&N West points with four wins.
Following Pettit in the points is Upper Lake, CA rookie Jeremy Doss, August 31st Pro Late Model winner Ross Strmiska of Manteca, fellow Manteca driver Jacob Gomes, and 2008 California State champion Jason Gilbert.
In addition to the 100 lap SRL Southwest Tour race, the SRL S2 Tour Series will run their spec Late Model-style cars in a pair of 20 lap races on the half-mile speedway, while both track and SRL Legends Tour points will be awarded in a 35 lap INEX Legends race on the quarter-mile oval.
Activities get started on Friday night with testing from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m., before action on Saturday. Saturday’s schedule will see fan gates open at 4 p.m. with qualifying for S2 and Legends at 4:45. 5:30 p.m. will mark the on track autograph session before the SRL Southwest Tour cars will qualify.
