Barry McKeever, host of The Rock With Barry McKeever and a sports announcer for the station, was awarded the Prep Sports Award by the SCSB.
“We’re just blessed to have had Barry for more than 22 years,” said KHTS AM 1220 Co-owner Jeri Seratti-Goldman. “He’s an outstanding sports broadcaster and he’s taken KBET and KHTS to a new level.”
More than a thousand people attended the event at the Lakeside Golf Club in Burbank.
“It’s kind of weird, it’s kind of different, it’s cool, it’s humbling, it’s awesome, it’s unexpected,” McKeever said about winning the award. ”It’s funny because I played football at Standford, coached football at Hart (High School) for a year but it took a lot of time. I always wanted to do broadcasting, it was always a dream of mine. I called Carl, made appointment. The only sports guy had just left and I was the morning sports guys at KBET. I’m the original KBET guy around there.”
McKeever still hosts high school football during football season Fridays at 7 p.m.
“When I (started working as a sports broadcaster), I just did it for fun, I didn’t do it to become rich or famous, I love sports, I love being around people and that’s the thing with broadcast,” McKeever said. “You have to do it because it’s something you enjoy and are passionate about.”
McKeever is the son of the late Mike McKeever and nephew of Marlin McKeever, twins who were given All-American status and who played for the University of Southern California, according to officials.
Other awardees at the event included Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Center Fielder Mike Trout for the Outstanding Achievement Award, LA Galaxy and Los Angeles Kings for the Outstanding Achievement Award, Los Angeles Dodgers Pitcher Clayton Kershaw for the Outstanding Achievement Award and Sports Writer and Former Sports Editor Bill Dwyre for the 2014 President’s Award.

Congrats to Barry “the Bear” McKeever. A great sportscaster. I am proud to have known Barry for 20+ years and consider him a good friend. Well deserved for him and KHTS (KBET).
