KHTS Game Of The Week Preview: Bishop Diego vs Golden Valley

The KHTS high school football Game of the Week broadcast brings you Bishop Diego vs Golden Valley, live from Harry Welch Stadium at Canyon High School tonight. The Vargo Physical Therapy Pregame show begins at 6:45 with kickoff at 7:00.

It’s not often high school football teams that are 85 miles apart can build a rivalry, but something might be brewing between the Bishop Diego Cardinals and Golden Valley Grizzlies if tonight is as close of a game as it appears to be on paper.

It started with what happened last season in the Division 6 championship game of the CIF Southern Section. Bishop Diego came to town with tailback John Harris (now a freshman playing linebacker at Columbia University) and an aggressive defense, and proceeded to dominate the Grizzlies, 37-6, en route to a California state title. Both teams jumped from Division 6 to Division 4, and Golden Valley jumped at the opportunity for a rematch in 2018.

Both the Cardinals and Grizzlies attack opposing teams with similar styles. Offensively, it’s all about the running game and taking care of the football. Defensively, it’s about flying around and forcing the offenses into mistakes.

Bishop Diego will look to pound the ball with power in the running game, calling running plays almost twice as much as passing plays (100-56). As a team, they average 5.4 yards per carry, and typically like to ride the hot hand (four players have eleven or more carries on the season). The backs are led by junior Adrian Soracco, who has 203 yards and four touchdowns in the Cardinals’ last two games.

Golden Valley will counter with a ton of confidence heading into this game after last week’s 21-14 overtime victory over Crespi. Johnathan Kaelin has been the most impressive Grizzly to this point in the season, as the short-yardage back converting goal-to-go touchdowns (eleven carries for 24 yards and three touchdowns) and the team’s leading receiver with 224 yards to go along with three more scores. He can also be seen roaming the back end of the defense (21 tackles).

“He’s a big, physical kid who’s always in the mix whether it’s [offense, defense, special teams] and he’s one of those kids who leads by example,” said Kelley this week about his do-everything playmaker.

Game on for this Division 6 Championship rematch.
