KHTS Game of the Week Preview: Calabasas vs Valencia

The KHTS high school football Game of the Week broadcast brings you Calabasas vs Valencia, a budding rivalry live from Paul A. Priesz Stadium at Valencia High School tonight. The Vargo Physical Therapy Pregame show begins at 6:45 with kickoff at 7:00.

The Coyotes and Vikings meet to close out their non-league schedule for the third consecutive year. Will Valencia finally get on the board against the team off the 101 Freeway?

Last season, these two teams played the most exciting regular season game in Division II, a 65-63 shootout thriller at Calabasas where both teams combined for 1,100 yards. Tonight, it might be a different story.

Valencia averaged over 55 points per game last season, but through four games this year, the Vikings average 31.75. Still very good, but the numbers are a bit skewed as they’ve been held to under 20 points twice. With Jayvaun Wilson still sidelined by a knee injury and so many key offensive linemen lost to graduation, the Vikings running game has struggled to find consistency. It means Davis Cop (six passing touchdowns, five interceptions and 52% completion percentage) is going to have to take his game to another level for the offense to be successful.

One thing is for certain with this year’s Valencia team: the defense is stifling. Ben Seymour (seven tackles for loss) and the rest of the No. 1 defense has only been bested once through four games in a 44-38 loss to Sierra Canyon. Sierra Canyon quarterback Chayden Peery will be playing Division I college football in a couple years, so no shame there.

The Vikings will have to contend with another dynamic passing offense from Calabasas. One of the staples of the Coyotes aerial attack is their ability to spread the ball around in a classic spread offense. Four receivers have scored multiple touchdowns for the Coyotes this season, led by Jermaine Burton and Mycah Pittman. Junior quarterback Jaden Casey has 13 passing touchdowns and is completing over 63% of his passes.

Valencia’s defense will be the most battle tested of any of the Foothill League teams when league play begins September 28th. Before then, it’ll have to fight one more time in non-league play against the Division II No. 6 Coyotes.

You can listen live on KHTS Radio FM 98.1 to Barry McKeever and Kyle Jellings on the call, with Justin Powell anchoring coverage from the KHTS Studios.

Friday’s schedule (kickoff for each game is at 7:00):

Calabasas (3-1) vs Valencia (2-2)

Hart (2-2) vs Ventura (4-4)

Royal (1-4) vs Canyon (1-3)
