The Santa Clarita Knights have gotten their first win of the 2006 season, defeating the Long Beach Ruff Ryders 8-6. They also made history with the win coming under Head Coach Rhonda Ripley, who becomes the FIRST Female Head Coach to secure a win in the West Coast Football League (WCFL); and on the west coast entirely. Records state that Coach Ripley is one of only two female Head Coaches in SemiPro history nationwide to ever achieve this milestone.
The Knights started the game on offense, and drove to the Ruff Ryders 30 yard line, but stalled after that, failing a 4th down attempt.
The Ruff Ryders offense accomplished the same thing as the Knights, nothing.
Attempting to punt on a 4th and 17, turned into a run as the snap went over the punters head.
The Knights took over, but were forced to punt after a 15-yard sack on QB
The Ruff Ryders then took over at the Knights 14. The Knights defense held strong, as it has all season, and forced the Ruff Ryders to punt once again. This time, the punt was special. Punting from their own 19, the ball hit a hang time of over 4 seconds and rolled all the way to the Knights own 4 yards line, making it a 77 yard punt and a new WCFL record.
Thats when things turned upside down for the Knights. Failing to move the ball on both 1st and 2nd, QB Mike Catando took the snap on 3rd down, but was hit in the back, causing him to fumble. The Ruff Ryders recovered in the endzone, but failed the 2pt conversion, making the score 6-0.
The Knights took over in the 2nd half, with a no huddle offense and drove from their own 20. The drive lasted 12 plays and finished when QB Mike Catando rolled out from a play action and took on a defender head on at the goal-line for the touchdown. The Knights ran to the right side with HB Larry Burton to make the score 8-6.
