Angels scout team finishes weekend stint with 5-1 record.
The Las Vegas Summer Baseball Club won five games over the weekend at College of the Canyons. The Las Vegas team, a scout team for the Los Angeles Angels, ended its visit to College of the Canyons with two wins yesterday.
The Las Vegas team beat the Victory team of current and incoming players to COC, 11-2, and a scout team from Riverside, 3-0.
The Premier Soccer Santa Clarita Valley Rooks came within minutes of ending their season-long winless streak. But the first-year program gave up a goal to the visiting So Cal Rush team with three minutes to play and lost, 2-1, at Canyon High School yesterday.
In auto racing, R.J. Johnson, a driver from Canyon Country, won the NASCAR Super Trucks race at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on Saturday night. It was his second win in a row and his third of the season. Johnson has won three of the past four Super Trucks races at Irwindale.
Daniel Herrington, a driver for Valencia’s Bryan Herta and his Bryan Herta Autosport team, was challenging for the win in the Firestone Indy Lights race at Iowa Speedway on Saturday. But he made contact with a lapped car and went from second to ninth in the closing laps.
Ana Beatriz won the race in Iowa.
Ron Hornaday Jr., a driver for Kevin Harvick Inc., won the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at The Milwaukee Mile. It was the 41st Truck Series win of his career, the most of any driver in the series. Hornaday regained the lead in the Truck Series standings with the win at Milwaukee, which came on his 51st birthday.
Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley finished 20th in the NASCAR Camping World Series West race at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma on Saturday. Jason Bowles, a driver from Ontario, won the race for the second year in a row.
