Manzano was formerly the assistant coach under Bill Bedgood, who stepped down in June.

KHTS Sports broke the news that Bedgood was leaving Saugus for a full-time teaching position at Valencia High School, and per Foothill League rules you can’t teach at one school, and coach at another.

Prior to being the varsity assistant coach, Manzano was the head coach of the JV team at Saugus.

Bill Bedgood announced to KHTS Sports this week he would be stepping down as boys’ varsity basketball head coach.

The Saugus Boys’ Basketball summer camp ends today after a month-long training and workout program.

With the conclusion of camp this week comes a some big news, a coaching change.

Alfredo Manzano, who was an assistant under varsity boys basketball head coach Bill Bedgood, stepped in as interim head coach over the summer while the search for a permanent head coach continues.

Serving as assistant coach under Bedgood the last two years, Manzano established a strong relationship with the program and players that he has had the pleasure of coaching.

Bedgood, who has been at the helm of the program since the 2014-15 season, resigned after accepting a full-time teaching job at Valencia High.

In the three seasons at Saugus, Bedgood compiled a 43-41 record overall, going 12-18 in the Foothill League.

The Centurions’ most recent season under Bedgood was their best during his reign, ending with 18 wins, the highest number of wins since the 2010-11 season.

The Centurions look to build on the recent success this upcoming season after winning six more games than the previous year’s campaign.

They could use the experience wherever they can get it, as the loss of seven seniors to graduation will change the chemistry of the team expecting to look to a new crop of underclassmen to follow on the Centurions’ success last season.

“We lost 7 seniors and a lot of people think that we are a really young team and we are not going to do as well, but I believe in our coaching staff and our team,” said sophomore Adrian Mcintyre.

When asked about the search for a permanent head coach and the upcoming season Manzano said, “All that other stuff is up to decision makers, but we don’t want that to be a distraction, we want to go out there, and continue to do what we’ve been doing.”

It was just another day at practice.

Manzano looks poised to remain as Bedgood’s successor as he has been head coach for AAU SCV 8U Playmaker’s basketball team and is also affiliated with the three-day “So Cal Spartans Basketball Camp,” which runs from July 10-13.

The Centurions’ season begins the first week of December, and plans are for the team to have a permanent head coach in place before school starts up again.
